Brewers, Yankees, and Guardians Clinch Post Season Berths
With a week and a half left in the regular season, the first three clubs have secured major league baseball post season berths.
The first one was the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee actually won the NL Central title when the Chicago Cubs lost to the Oakland Athletics on the afternoon of September 18th. The Brewers then put an exclamation point on it with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at a night game in Milwaukee that evening. If you like strikeouts, this was the game for you as there were a total of 28 between the two clubs. Milwaukee’s Jake Bauers drove in the winning run with a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth for a 2-1 Brewers’ win. There was a celebration with a confetti drop in the stadium after the exciting finish, which would have seemed lame if they had lost the game even though they had clinched the title earlier.
Out in Seattle, Anthony Rizzo drove in Jasson Dominguez twice and the New York Yankees beat the Mariners 2-1 to clinch at least a Wild Card berth. The Yankees are in first place in the AL East and have won seven of ten while the second place Baltimore Orioles are starting to fade at the wrong time. Baltimore has lost seven of 10 and trails New York by 4 ½ games. New York is in good shape to win the division crown.
On September 19th, Andres Gimenez drove home Jose Ramirez in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 to clinch an AL Wild Card slot. Cleveland leads second place Kansas City by 6 1/2 games in the AL Central race, so the Guardians are closing in on that division title.
