Final Jeopardy: Geographic Name’s Almost the Same (6-18-24)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/18/2024) in the category “Geographic Name’s Almost the Same” was:

Legend says in 1876 a dragon built for the first “Ring” cycle had its neck sent to this Mideast capital, not the right German city

14x super champ Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, IN, sailed over the $300K mark yesterday by $26,000. In Game 15, her challengers are: Mark Gagliardi, an actor & podcaster, orig. from Knoxville, TN; and Colleen Matthews, a speech-language pathologist from Portland, OR.

Round 1 Categories: Churches & Cathedrals – 3-letter Nouns – U.s. Government – Entertaining Autobios – The Familiar Sum of Its Parts – The Scandal of It All

Mark found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “U.S. Government” under the $800 clue just after the commercial break. He was in second place with $2,200, $200 less than Colleen’s lead. Mark made it a true Daily Double and the time ran out before he could come up with another department so he was WRONG.

While the National Park Service is a bureau of the Department of the Interior, The Forest Service is an agency of this department show

Adriana finished in the lead with $6,800. Colleen was second with $3,400 and Mark was last with $2,800. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: A Place in History – Diamond Mining – Oscar-Winning Songs – Botany – By Lines – “CC” Me

Colleen found the first Daily Double in “A Place in History” under the $1,600 clue on the 4th pick of the round. She was in second place with $5,400, $1,400 less than Adriana’s lead. Colleen bet $2,000 and guessed the Urals. That was WRONG.

Before Hannibal could cross the Alps, he had to bring his army through this other European mountain range show

Colleen found the last Daily Double in “By Lines” under the $1,200 clue on the 17th pick of the round. She was in second place with $9,800, $1,000 less than Adriana’s lead. Colleen bet $2,000 but it came to her too late so she was WRONG.

”The show’s not over until the Mockingjay sings” show

Adriana finished in the lead with $13,600. Colleen was second with $10,600 and Mark was last with $7,200. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS BEIRUT?

Wagner Operas.com relates what occurred in 1876 when the dragon’s neck went missing: “The dragon in Siegfried was built…in England and it was shipped in pieces to Germany. Unfortunately, the neck, the part that gave the figure its most natural movement, ended up on opening night not in Bayreuth but in Beirut. As a result, the dragon probably ended up looking quite ridiculous.”

I looked up native speakers for Bayreuth on Forvo. It seems the Bay in Bayreuth is really pronounced like “buy” as opposed to “bay” for the first syllable of Beirut. However, I would not doubt that Beirut’s French spelling (Beyrouth) had something to do with the mix-up. Beirut had a lot of French connections in 1876. Find out more here.

Mark came up with Hamburg and Amman. He lost $7,195 and finished with $5.00.

Colleen got it right. She bet $4,000 and finished with $14,600.

Adriana also got it right. She bet $10,000 and won the game with $23,600. Adriana’s 15-day total is $349,600.

Strong game with formidable contenders. As Kevin said, that last clue (the Flemish diamond city) made the difference. I ran several Mideast cities through my head, including Beirut, and tried matching them with German cities, but could not settle on one.

Unbelievable how Mark missed that softball “Forest Service” DD. Ages ago we were taught a mnemonic for the order of the Cabinet departments, which is now outdated. ST DAPIACL + HUT.

I thought the Familiar Sums clues were fun and easy to decipher.

It seemed like Mark’s DD answer was on the tip of his tongue but he just couldn’t get it out. I was over here yelling “just say it, just say it, even if you’re not sure,” but his time ran out. He didn’t seem to be able to regain his footing after that. Dommage.

Meantime, Colleen initially looked like she wasn’t going to be able to get a buzz in edgewise, but she got in there and showed her chops. I was rooting for her.

Mark was very charismatic. So, I looked him up on IMDB. Then, it clicked – he was on “Blood and Treasure” just two or three years ago. B&T had two seasons on CBS. He played “Father Chuck”, who ends up with Vatican Intelligence (“which doesn’t exist!”).

I really didn’t have a clue on Final, but the first city that came to mind was Beirut! 3/3 for DD. I knew the first one because I used to drive through a national forest on my way to my last job, so, I knew that department!

Colleen was somewhat of a “stealth” contestant. Didn’t hear anything, then, all of a sudden, she’s in the lead!

    Overall, good game!

All 3 DDs were missed resulted our ninth skunking of the season. The DDs were not nice to anybody today.

  4. Kevin Cheng says:

Darn those daily doubles to both challengers today. We went 0 for 3 on those daily doubles. Had Colleen not missed that last DJ! clue, she would have won but instead Adriana won again. Adriana keeps dodging a bullet in the end and keeps winning. Last week and so far this week, the challengers put up a huge fight and gave the champ a strong run for her money.
