WHO IS BRENDA LEE?

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was originally recorded by then 13-year-old Brenda Lee. Brenda was known as “Little Miss Dynamite”, a nod to her song “Dynamite”, petite size and knock-out voice. She was hand-picked to sing the song by Johnny Marks, who also wrote “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer and other holiday hits. “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” has been on December charts since the 1960s. In November 2023, Brenda Lee released a holiday video with appearances from Trisha Yearwood and Tanya Tucker. This helped propel the song to the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100. making Brenda the oldest solo artist to have a No. 1 hit. Louis Armstrong had long held the honor with 1964’s “Hello Dolly”. That wasn’t the only record she broke.

I don’t know about now, but back in the day, “I’m Sorry” was Brenda Lee’s signature song and it showcases her phenomenal voice far more than “Christmas Tree” in my opinion.

Tim thought it might be Cher. He lost $2,251 and finished with $2,749.

Ryan went with Dolly Parton. He didn’t bet anything so he still had $7,200.

Amar also came up with Parton. He lost $1,500 but won the game with the remaining $14,500. Amar’s 4-day total is $55,899.

I went with Diana Ross. I thought back to the College clue, when someone said that she was 90!

I’m guessing Tim is with the US Coast Guard, with search and rescue, and Sitka. I thought he was going to make it into a game.

  2. VJ says:

Another thing I remember about Brenda is that picture of her at age 13 with Elvis Presley. The funniest part of that video is about 0.54 when it looks like she’s trying to hang on to her wig 🤣

Connie Francis is another with the powerhouse vocals who started young but is in her 80s now. Maybe the angels were giving out the big pipes in December — Connie’s birthday is a day after Brenda’s.

That was a tough final that you had to know, otherwise impossible to guess. I saw Brenda perform that last winter on a TV special and was well aware that it rose to the top of the chart. My former college roommate adores her, me not so much. The song of hers I like is “All Alone Am I.”

First DD wasn’t so difficult. The “Under the Boardwalk” lyrics are ingrained in my memory. Someone definitely should have known the V phonograph. No one could deduce the NASA -ology? Remembered the stars of “Klute” and (unfortunately) “Encino Man,” although I never saw that one.

Props to Amar for winning 4X; we’ll see if the 4-win curse hits him, or will he (earth)worm his way into the ToC?

  4. Rick says:

I went with Petula Clark for FJ as she is still an active singer. In fact, she came out with a new album about 4-5 years ago. At the same token, I knew that she was some 90 years old now so that would obviously leave her out.

  5. VJ says:

I didn’t think Dolly was a bad guess. She actually started out in the business around the same time as Brenda Lee but it took Dolly longer to become famous.

Dolly released her first record “Puppy Love” in 1959. Dolly (b. 1/19/46) is roughly a year and a month younger than Brenda (b. 12/11/44).

Cher (b. 5/20/46) is 4 months younger than Dolly, but Cher first became famous as part of a duo and didn’t release a solo record until mid-60s.

And we start the with a triple stumper as today’s final was a tough one.
