Final Jeopardy: Artists (9-13-23)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/13/2023) in the category “Artists” was:
On Oct. 26 1886, he said “The dream of my life is accomplished… I see the symbol of unity & friendship between 2 nations”
In the third match of the 2023 Second Chance Tournament the contestants are: Hari Parameswaran, a hardware engineer from Cupertino, CA, Donna Vorreyer, a writer & retired educator from Willowbrook, IL; and Matt Wierman, an aerospace engineer from La Palma, CA.

Donna found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Bill, Billy, or William” under the $800 clue on the 7th pick of the round. She was in second place with $600, $1,800 less than Hari’s lead. Donna bet $800 and she was RIGHT.
William Thomson is a fine name for a physicist, but after developing that absolute temp. scale, Lord this had a nice ring show
Donna finished in the lead with $7,000. Hari was second with $5,000 and Matt was last with $3,000. All clues were shown.
Round 2 Categories: To Sir Paul, with Love – “C”s the Day – Also a Candy – Pueblos Magicos – & We Have a Novel Title – 15-Letter Words

NASA called the activity in this type of galaxy reminiscent of the end of a pyrotechnics show show
Donna got the last Daily Double in “& We Have a Novel Title” under the $1,200 clue on the 20th pick. She was in the lead with $12,800 now, $1,800 more than Matt in second place. Donna bet $5,000 and tried “The Grapes of Wrath”. That was WRONG.
“She clutched the child so fiercely to her breast, that it sent forth a cry; she turned her eyes downward at” this symbol show
Matt finished in the lead with $15,000. Donna was second with $8,200 and Hari was last with $7,800. All clues were shown.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO IS FRÉDÉRIC-AUGUSTE BARTHOLDI?
I don’t know why they have the ellipsis in there. These three words were all that was left out at the end of the quote: “–two great republics” (per the National Park Service). Bartholdi made this remark 2 days before he attended the official unveiling of Lady Liberty. According to “The Woman Behind the Statue of Liberty”, Bartholdi’s own mother and a Roman goddess are two possible inspirations. Imagine how proud Bartholdi’s mother must have been if she was her son’s model. She was still alive when the statue was unveiled. There’s a picture of his mother on Find-a-Grave.
A 22 cents U.S. commemorative first class Bartholdi stamp was issued in July 1985. (First class stamps just went up to 66 cents in July 2023.)
Hari got it right. He bet it all and doubled his score to $15,600.
Donna responded with “the Statue of Liberty guy”. Ken found that so amusing, he wanted to give her credit for it but, anyway, it cost Donna $7,401 and left her with $799.
Matt wrote down Laboule. Perhaps he meant Laboulaye (the “Father of the Statue of Liberty”) who died in 1883. Matt lost $1,701, leaving him with $13,299. That made Hari the winner and he is the one joining Jill Tucker and David Maybury in the Thursday and Friday final games.
A triple stumper from each round:
THE STATE OF CONGRESS ($800) Benjamin Bourne in the 1790s, Lincoln Chafee, Ambrose Burnside
ALSO A CANDY ($1200) An article called the Chicago Bears of 1938 this kind of team since they set “a season’s record of 56 fumbles”
2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Classical Composers”
Monsieur Crescendo & Signor Vaccarino (“Mr. Racket”) were derisive nicknames for this composer whose last opera dates from 1829 show

(The link More clues on page 2 actually took me to Tuesday’s recap.)
This former NYer feels “tired and poor” by knowing it was the Statue of Liberty but not the sculptor. At least I knew the fumbling Bears and the triangles.
There’s a definite undercurrent of frustration among former one-and-done contestants who resent the 2nd Chance Tournaments being restricted to players from specific seasons. A few even say they are going to lobby the producer for inclusion. “Squeaky wheel” theory.
Thanks, Howard, I fixed that. FYI, if that link is broken for whatever reason, you can still get to page 2 from the big number 2 at the bottom of the recap
Yes, that’s how I got here, thanks.
The look on Donna’s face when Ken was reading the first Daily Double reminded me of the “wth” look on my face when they have a wordy clue that isn’t making immediate sense to me. Thankfully, Donna was able to decipher it in time!
