Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/19/2022) in the category “American History” was:

In the third semifinal match of the 2022 Second Chance Tournament, the contestants are: James Fraser, a naval aviator from Newport Beach, CA, Reneé Russell, a branch office administrator from Baltimore, MD, and Pam Schoenberg, a dentist and entrepreneur from South Salem, NY. The links in the contestants’ names go to their original games.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS PARIS?

In 1782, Ben Franklin, John Adams and John Jay were sent to Paris to represent the newly independent USA in treaty negotiations. On Sunday, October 27 (third transcribed page shown), John Adams made his dislike and distrust of Franklin more than plain in his diary, almost to the point of paranoia: “Between two as subtle Spirits, as any in this World, the one malicious, the other I think honest, I shall have a delicate, a nice, a critical Part to Act.” Adams then describes Franklin as cunning and outlines the methods Franklin might employ to divide John Jay and himself.

I also found the first transcribed entry on the page amusing: “The first Thing to be done, in Paris, is always to send for a Taylor, Peruke maker and Shoemaker….” At least, Adams made sure he was looking good while dealing with “Bad Ben.”

Pam went with Philadelphia. That cost her $5,500 and left her with $9,900.

James got it right. He bet $10,902 and won the game with $31,801.

For the next two days, James Fraser, Molly Karol and Jessica Stephens will duke it out for a spot in the Tournament of Champions that will begin on Halloween.

Only stumper I knew for sure was the diaper company.

Philly and Boston seemed too obvious for FJ, so I went with NYC, where there’s a John Jay HS and also a school of law at NYU.

  2. Lou says:

Happy to see james winning today, I am rooting for him in the finals

  3. Rick says:

I went with Philadelphia too in FJ, and struck out. Good for James; he selected Paris.

    • Jason says:

As did I, thinking of Ben Franklin and his partying days there (don’t know if you know of the “Hellfire Club”).

Unusually, I got well less than half the triple stumpers correct! I’m usually about 50%.

Having seen all three now, I think James has the best chance.

      • VJ says:

Yes, James was like a tornado in the first round. I thought he would have a runaway, but Pam did a good job of catching up in the second.

Jessica on Monday had the only runaway.

  4. Richard Corliss says:

    Renee, darn those daily doubles.
