TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS GERBER?

Ann Turner Cook, the original model for the world-famous Gerber baby, passed away at the age of 95 on June 3, 2022. According to the New York Times report on Mrs. Cook’s passing and her association with Gerber, the charcoal drawing of 4 or 5 months old Ann was done in 1927 by neighbor, Dorothy Hope Smith, a commercial illustrator. In 1928, Gerber “put out the call for a portrait of a baby to be used in its advertising campaigns.” Smith submitted her sketch of baby Ann and it won. According to Smith’s wikipedia entry, she received a $300 prize for the drawing, turning over all rights to Gerber. The company trademarked the image in 1931. Mrs. Cook was paid royalties of $5,000 in 1951 for the use of her image.

Gerber is now a subsidiary of Nestlé. The company now holds an annual babies’ photo contest. The winner’s photo appears in Gerber advertisements and the winner is awarded a grand prize of $25,000.

Eugene thought it was Morton’s (the little “When it rains, it pours” girl). He lost $414 and finished with $1,186.

Allie got it right. She bet $51.00 and finished with $3,851.

Cris also got it right. Before revealing his bet, Ken remarked that Cris already had won the most money this season with $44,600. He bet a big $15,221 this time and won the game with $59,821. Cris Pannullo starts out the week with a 7-day total of $221,901. That’s what you call taking a giant step!

Would the answer “Gerbers” with the added “s” be a correct answer?
Just want to know for the Final Answer Contest with the wife.

    • VJ says:

idk, Michael, I don’t think so but I am not an authority in these matters. You could try posting the question on Jeopardy’s Facebook or emailing the show (link at bottom of recap). Someone from the show may give you a definite response.

  2. Sam in Seattle says:

Yes, VJ. I too was surprised at Ken’s reaction as Chris had made large bets previously. I was actually more surprised at the small bet Chris made on Tuesday. I wonder if 15221 is significant for Chris. James Holzhauer used to bet his daughter’s birthday and his anniversary date frequently.

  3. Lou says:

Cris made a big gamble in today’s game and it really paid off for him.

I am looking forward to the second chance tournament as well.

  4. Sam in Seattle says:

I notice that contestants who make big wagers on Daily Doubles tend to win a large percentage of their games. Older viewers will remember Alex being surprised when very large wagers were put forth. It is a more common occurrence recently and a strategy used successfully by Chris Pannullo, James Holzhauer, Matt Amodio and others. Also, (and this may be a result of my incorrect observations) players with a history of gambling – in all its forms – seem more comfortable with larger wagers. Anyway, congratulations to Chris for getting into the Jeopardy record book. Looking forward to the Second Chance tournament.

    • VJ says:

I was actually quite surprised that Cris bet $15,221 in FJ! today. He was definitely not happy when he lost that same amount in FJ! last Tuesday and he made a tiny bet the next day.

I was also idling wondering why Ken said Oh, wow! when Cris bet everything on the first Daily Double. Cris pretty much always does that.

  5. VJ says:

Eugene must have thought the clue said 4 or 5 years — the Morton salt girl ain’t no baby, and here I didn’t think that would happen after all. I mean, Ken read the clue out loud

  6. Kevin Cheng says:

I think it’s gonna be tough to take down Cris since he is very strong with the buzzer and clues from the bottom of the board. The Second Chance tournament begins one week from today.
