New champ Ryan Long, a rideshare driver from Philadelphia, PA, won $18,800 on Friday. In Game 2, he is up against: Nick Dee, a photographer from Los Angeles, CA; and Divya Badri, a software developer from Coral Valley, IL.

Round 2 Categories: Swedish History – That Book Plagues Me – Skeleton Crew – Close to the Vest – Let’s Gamble – I’ve Got a Big Bank Role

Ryan found the first Daily Double in “Swedish History” under the $1,600 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $11,000, $3,000 more than Nick in second place. Ryan bet $2,000, and said “knight them”. That was WRONG.

The Warrior King, Charles XII, did this in 1708 with 44,000 troops; as wisdom would suggest, it didn’t work. show

Nick got the last Daily Double in “Skeleton Crew” under the $1,600 clue with 10 clues left after it. In second place with $10,800, Nick had $3,000 less than Ryan’s lead. With $3,000 on the line, Nick took a shot at it with pelvic bone but that was WRONG.

Ryan finished in the lead with $16,200. Nick was right behind him with $14,600 and Divya was last with $4,000. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE GATEWAY ARCH (or ST. LOUIS ARCH)?

The idea for The Gateway Arch began in 1935. St. Louis was thought to be the ideal place to erect a memorial to Thomas Jefferson, as it was there that Lewis & Clark set out to explore western land acquired by the Louisiana Purchase. 12 years later in 1947, Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen designed a 630-foot arch that won the competition for the monument. Saarinen died in 1961, 2 years before construction began on the Gateway Arch. The project was completed in 1965 and opened to the public on 6/10/1967. St. Louis was known as the Gateway to the West so it is doubly symbolic that the monument was named the Gateway Arch and that it was built where St. Louis first sprung up.

Divya didn’t have a response. That cost Divya $700. She finished with $3,300.

Nick got it right. A $6,599 bet brought Nick up to $21,199.

Ryan got it right, too. He bet $8,000 and won the game with $24,200. Ryan’s 2-day total is $43,000.

Please explain the BRISK LIT category from Thursday.
    Thanks!

    • VJ says:

That was on Friday, KT. I tried to figure out what “Brisk” had to do with those titles/answers* but I gave up

Why didn’t Nick bet all she had and could have won the game.. you think you’d want to go for the win All or nothing I bet she’s scratching her head now wondering why she didn’t bet all she had..

    • Howard says:

When Nick had brain freeze and thought Copenhagen was Swedish, I thought that could cost her the game, but eventually it didn’t affect the outcome.

Ryan’s bet was wrong. He needed to bet more in case Nick bet it all. Her wager should have been everything or $1601. The latter would have assured her of 2nd place in case she missed FJ and the other contestant bet it all and got it right. But her $6599 wager incorporated that very strategy, so the real error was Ryan’s.

Knew FJ right away, but hadn’t heard the other name for it and was surprised at first when they accepted it.

Ryan’s low-key, calm demeanor is the antithesis of Mattea’s. But he’s very good.

      • Jason says:

That’s exactly what I thought – I said “Gateway Arch”, and have never, ever heard the other name.

Also, yes, bad wagers by both Nick and Ryan. Only dumb luck that Ryan won again today.

I got the Plague clue, because I did my last paper in college on it, and recalled I graduated 30 years ago on the 15th!

But, likewise, my French and Latin ears were wounded – again – with a soft G in “cogito”. That’s how Alex (incorrectly) said it; I wonder if that was Mayim’s homage!

  3. Lou says:

Strong group today. Nick is very fast on the buzzer finger. My recommendation for anyone here: please visit the arch in St Louis at any time during the summer months!

  4. VJ says:

There’s a song about that horse Comanche by Johnny Horton that implies he was Custer’s horse. I grew up believing that but I read somewhere that it isn’t true. 😒

  5. Kevin Cheng says:

For the first time we have a contestant named Nick who is a female. Usually Nick is a male but this time it’s a female.
