Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Hits Three Homers in Blue jays Win over Yankees
Last year, Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. finished second in the American League Most Valuable Player vote behind the Angels’ Shohei Ohtani. He’s starting off this season like he’s ready to be this year’s MVP.
The New York Yankees hosted the Jays at Yankee Stadium on April 13th, and Vlad Jr. hit three home runs and a double to lead Toronto to 6-4 victory. He drove in four of the Jays’ runs, and two of the homers were off Gerrit Cole, the ace (by far) of the Yankees’ starting pitchers, who led the AL in wins last year. Cole tipped his cap to Vlad after he doubled in the sixth inning following his first two homers. Respect from one great player to another. Vlad hit his last two homers and the double after getting his finger accidently spiked in a play at first. He received two stitches in it after the game.
After a week of the regular season, Guerrero is 9 for 23 at the plate (.391), with four homers and eight RBIs. The Blue Jays are widely expected to make the post season and will figure prominently in what should be a tight three or four team race in the American League East.
