5 Ryan Reynolds Must See Comedies

Canadian-American actor and producer Ryan Reynolds has risen to the top of the entertainment industry, delighting audiences around the globe with several gigantic box office hits. But while his career began with performing in a soap opera, the 6’2″ actor has made a huge splash with his comedic talents in several major movies over the years. Let’s take a look at five of the movies that have tickled people’s funny bones in a big way.

1. DEADPOOL (2016): In the blockbuster movie “Deadpool”, Reynolds takes on the role of Wade Wilson, a former military operative who is transformed into a super-human by an evil scientist. The diabolical experiment leaves Deadpool with amazing restorative powers and a warped sense of humor. Along with a pair of mutant allies, Deadpool takes on the enemy who cratered his life. The lead character may originate from Marvel comics, but he’s far from being family-friendly.

The comedy of “Deadpool” mostly lies in the salty, fourth-wall-breaking behavior of the lead character himself. Nicknamed the “merc with a mouth”, Deadpool displays his penchant for four-letter words with an energetic flair and often succeeds in getting laughs. The delivery of his crass lines will likely make you giggle at the very least.

2. DEADPOOL 2 (2018): Reynolds makes his triumphant return to the Deadpool franchise with this second and latest installment in the series. This time, Reynolds defends an angry teenage mutant who happens to be the target of a super-soldier from the future. Deadpool seeks out help from a group of mutants to protect the boy from the villainous Cable (Josh Brolin) and his assortment of advanced weaponry.

Similar to the first “Deadpool” flick, the meta-comedy ensues with Reynolds sharing his thoughts and wisecracks with people both off and on camera. “Deadpool 2” is chock full of witty remarks and pop culture references.

3. FREE GUY (2021): Reynolds teamed up with British actress Jodie Comer for the box office smash “Free Guy.” Our leading man plays a character who discovers he is a background player in a video game, similar to an extra in a movie. He and Comer take on the baddies controlling the game with life and death stakes at risk. Reynolds also gets ample opportunity to continue with his trademark comedic delivery.

The lead character “Guy” is an earnest and innocent soul, but that doesn’t change how Reynolds delivers his lines and allows for the comedy to flow from his child-like manner. Guy often has colorful descriptions of coffee and other delicacies he’s enjoying, including comments such as “it’s like my tongue had a baby with a sunrise.”

The above scene from “Free Guy” is Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek’s last film appearance. According to IMDB trivia, this “was filmed when he knew it was unlikely that he would live to see the result.” Trebek passed away on November 8, 2020, nine months before “Free Guy” was released.

4. THE CROODS 2: A NEW AGE (2020): Reynolds’ comedic chops are put to good use again in the animated feature “The Croods 2: A New Age”. Once more, Reynolds plays a character named “Guy”. This time, however, he’s at the center of an ‘in-law clash” of sorts, with two sets of parents hoping he’ll court their respective daughters. The movie is chock full of well-known actors, including Nicolas Cage who plays the father of Emma Stone, as well as Peter Dinklage, Leslie Mann, and Kelly Marie Tran. Their talents are all aimed at getting laughs in a movie some critics describe as wickedly funny. The story also has built-in hilarity, including monkeys who communicate through punching, a sloth that Guy wears as a belt (and is also his best friend,) and a sentient wig.

5. POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU (2019): Reynolds plays the title character in “Pokémon Detective Pikachu”, with a plot revolving around an ace detective who’s gone missing and his young adult son who has begun the search to find him. Helping with the investigation is the missing detective’s former Pokémon partner, the animated and flamboyant Detective Pikachu. It turns out the detective’s son is the only human Pikachu can speak with, and they work together to resolve the perplexing mystery. Reynolds, as usual, doesn’t miss a beat in making the most of the comedic elements available. He’s a wise-cracking machine here, letting loose with joke after joke from a tight script. More comedy rolls out with cameos from the likes of Bill Nighy and the actual Ryan Reynolds, offering a good helping of entertainment.

CONCLUSION

Ryan Reynolds’ career shows little sign of slowing down and, in addition to the funny films already covered, he will be starring in other upcoming films. According to IMDB, these will include playing Ebenezer Scrooge in “Spirited”, an adaptation of Dickens’ “Christmas Carol”. A remake of 1985’s Clue starring Reynolds has been announced, as has “Deadpool 3”.
