Coach K Sets ACC Record for Most Basketball Wins

The last couple of weeks have been pretty good for Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. On January 25th, Coach K won his 1000th game as a head coach when the Blue Devils beat St. Johns 77-68. He is the first Division I coach to reach 1000 wins. There was a 77-73 setback in the next game at then #8 Notre Dame on the 28th, but Duke then went to Charlottesville to take on unbeaten and #2 ranked Virginia on January 31st. Duke beat the Cavaliers 69-63.

Next, Duke took on Georgia Tech at home on February 4th. The Blue Devils had to rally, but they put away the stubborn Yellow Jackets 72-66. The victory was another record for Coach K; it was his 423rd Atlantic Coast Conference victory, breaking Dean Smith’s record for most ACC wins. Smith coached at North Carolina from 1961-1997.

Duke is 19-3 overall, 6-3 in the ACC and tied for 5th in the conference standings in a very tight race (Virginia leads the conference standings at 8-1). Duke, currently ranked #4 in the country, next will play #10 Notre Dame at home on February 7th.
