#2 Virginia Beats #4 Duke 65-63 in Matchup of ACC Heavyweights
Marvin Bagley III had a huge game for fourth ranked Duke, scoring 30 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the #2 Virginia Cavaliers edged the Blue Devils 65-63 in Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. on January 27th. It was Virginia’s first win at Duke since 1995.
Kyle Guy led the Cavaliers with 17 points, Devon Hall had 14, Ty Jerome had 13, and De’Andre Hunter added 12 off the bench. But Virginia’s defense was very effective in shutting down the powerhouse offense of the Blue Devils, despite Bagley’s production. Duke entered the game averaging 91.7 points per game–best in the nation–and was held to 63. Virginia held #18 Clemson to just 36 points in on January 23rd, and has allowed 60 or more points just five times in 21 games. The Cavaliers improved to 20-1 overall, 9-1 in the ACC while Duke fell to 18-3, 6-3 in the ACC.
There were some upsets of ranked teams in college basketball on January 27th. Kentucky beat #7 West Virginia in Morgantown 83-76, #12 Oklahoma lost at Alabama 80-73, and North Carolina State won at #10 North Carolina 95-91 in overtime. It was just the second win for the Wolfpack at Chapel Hill in their last 15 games there.
