UCONN Crushes St. John’s in Battle for 1st Place in Big East
There was a matchup of the top two men’s basketball teams in the Big East Conference on February 25th, the only game between Top 25 teams of the evening. UCONN, ranked #6, hosted #15 St. John’s in Hartford, Connecticut. St. John’s was red hot coming into the game, riding a 13 game winning streak. The Huskies had an 18 game winning streak earlier this season, before St. John’s ended that on February 6th with an 81-72 victory in New York.
While St. John’s had been hot, the Red Storm’s shooting was as cold in this game as New England has been following the recent blizzard. St. John’s only shot 20% (11-56), missing their final 24 field goal attempts of the game, and scored just 14 points in the second half as the Huskies blew them out 72-40.
Tarris Reed Jr. led the way for UCONN with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocked shots. The Huskies (26-3, 16-2 in the Big East) moved into 1st place and have a ½ game lead over St. John’s (22-6, 15-2).
St. John’s will attempt to regroup at home against Villanova (22-6, 13-4) on February 28th, while UCONN will host Seton Hall (19-9, 9-8) the same day.
