Toronto’s LaTroy Hawkins Now Has Saves Against All 30 Major League Clubs

Veteran relief pitcher LaTroy Hawkins of the Toronto Blue Jays became the 13th pitcher to record a save against all 30 major league clubs when he picked up the save in the Jays’ 9-7 win over the Minnesota Twins in Toronto on August 5th.

The 42 year old Hawkins, who first broke into the majors in 1995 with the Twins, has announced that this is his last season. Hawkins has done a little of everything as a pitcher. He began as a starter, but had little success. Since then, he has been both a closer and setup man, mostly the latter, with varying degrees of success. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Hawkins’ saves against all 30 clubs is the fact that he only has 127 total saves in his career. Usually, pitchers who reach this mark spend most of their careers as closers, such as current players Jonathan Papelbon (334 saves) and Huston Street (301).

Hawkins may get one last shot at the post season. The win improved Toronto’s record to 57-52, good for 2nd place in the A.L East, 4 ½ games behind the New York Yankees, and also very much in contention for a Wild Card playoff berth.
