Tony Romo Leads Cowboys Comeback Over Giants
The Dallas Cowboys overcame a 23-13 fourth quarter deficit and pulled out a 27-26 victory in their season opener at home against the New York Giants. Dallas QB Tony Romo led a 6 play 72 yard drive in a minute and 27 seconds, capped off with a touchdown pass to tight end Jason Witten with seven seconds left on the clock.
The Giants played not to lose late in the game, with some poor clock management. Such tactics rarely end well. With the Giants on the Dallas 1 yard line and less than 2 minutes left in the game, Quarterback Eli Manning threw a pass away on third down, stopping the clock instead of running the ball and eating up some time (if there had been a stop) or scoring a touchdown (making it two score lead). Instead, the Giants kicked a field goal and left enough time on the clock for the Cowboys to score a touchdown.
It was a costly win for Dallas, as leading receiver Dez Bryant will miss several weeks with a broken foot. Speaking of receivers, the Giants cut James Jones just before the start of the season. Jones was quickly snapped up by the Green Bay Packers, with whom Jones had spent several productive seasons through 2013. Jones caught two touchdown passes in Green Bay’s win over the Bears. And the Giants day was really completed when their plane had mechanical troubles and couldn’t take off from Dallas until 4:00 a.m.
