The Captain Recap: Ray Donovan Season 2 Finale

Last week in Rodef, Ezra’s attempt to get Ray to kill Kate McPherson backfired and failed so he told Avi she was the rodef. Ray got his hands on the video proving his daughter witnessed the murder of Marvin Gaye Washington and Re-Kon but got arrested before he could meet with Cookie Brown. The robbery at the weed store went horribly wrong with Terry getting locked in at the store and Mickey returned home with a safe that may be empty right when Shorty set off an explosion in his room.

“The Captain” (Ray Donovan S2 E12 – 9/28/2014) opens up with Ray being released from jail. He puts his wedding ring on and gets his cell phone out. Lena appears and tells Ray that Terry’s bail was set at $50,000 but he refused bail. After an unanswered call to Cookie, Ray visits Terry in jail, blaming the whole caper on Mickey, but Terry is adamant about paying for his crime. Ray leaves with one last plea: he may be going away and if Terry won’t get out of jail and take care of the family, Mickey will.

Cookie informs Ray he has already seen the tape and wants his million dollars back. The “no copies” story the kid told in the last episode was bull and now Cookie knows “Snowflake” witnessed the murders.

At home, Abby considers taking the kids to Boston but Bridget claims she is not scared of Cookie. Conor is recuperating from the broken arm he sustained in the explosion and is high on painkillers when Jim shows up. Conor wants to meet him, asking: “Is this the guy Dad said you can bleep in your bed.” LOL. Abby has no use for Jim now and doesn’t believe he can protect her and the kids.

Goodbye, rodef, you were warned
In Boston, Kate pay Mrs. Shaughnessy a visit to give her closure. Sully killed her daughter. Kate doesn’t know how but Mrs. Shaughnessy does — “he strangled her just like the other two”. As soon as Kate returns home, she is shot in the chest by Avi and then in the head.

Ray is frisked as he goes to Cookie’s house during the birthday party for Alphonse, Cookie’s son. After Ray tells Cookie that Bridget told the cops she didn’t see anything, the rap mogul says then their children don’t have to grow up without fathers but he still needs the million back. Ray brings it back and is frisked again, but the two bodyguards don’t bother to look in the bag. Too bad for Cookie. Ray blows his brains out. When the bodyguards bust in, he overpowers one. Holding a gun on the other, he tells them that they can split the money on the desk or just one of them can keep it all. Leaving them to sort that out, he hears a shot. One of them is now a rich man.

Daryll and Mickey get the safe open but it only contains $20,000. Daryll is angry but Mickey convinces him to pay a visit to Alan on the pretext of owing him an apology. Once there, Mickey demands the $500,000 Alan originally offered him to leave town but now it’s compensation for screwing up his movie deal with Jerry Weiss. They get in a fight that ends with Alan flying through the patio door window and landing in the pool. Daryll is impressed but his mother, Claudette, is not. She is about to call the police when Mickey says Daryll will go to jail to. She tells Mickey she never wants to see him again and tells them both to go.

In a better place now
Mickey and Daryll drive away, arguing about the $20,000 when parole officer, Ronald Keith, calls. He wants a cut of the weed store robbery profits. Mickey can tell he’s at the racetrack. They head over there and beat the hell out of Ronald Keith who gets them to stop, talking about a sure bet on Papa’s Mustache, a horse with 8 to 1 odds. Mickey decides Keith has taken enough of a beating and goes off to look at the horse, while Daryll tries to remind him that’s all the money they have and Keith is a degenerate loser. Horse No. 7 walks up to Mickey and says “I forgive you, Mickey. I’m in a better place now” and says he is the captain. “Holy shit”, Mickey says. The horse’s name turns out to be “The Captain” and Mickey plunks down all $20K on it. At the next window, Ronald Keith bets on The Captain too. The odds on the Captain are 50 to 1 and they win a cool million dollars. Everybody’s in a better place now.

Mickey goes to the gym to give Terry his cut of the original money but Terry says he’s the one who is going to jail and wants a full cut. He doesn’t want Mickey around anymore. Terry gives Potato Pie money to buy new equipment for the gym and fix the floor.

Bunchy tells his group what happened with Clifford at Patty’s house. Bunchy is terrified he’ll hurt a kid the way he was hurt. The leader assures him he is okay after Bunchy denies looking at kiddie porn or being aroused by children. Stan, the guy who previously freaked Bunchy out with a gay pass, now encourages him to tell Patty why he behaved the way he did. Patty is not convinced that Bunchy doesn’t have pedophile tendencies nor is she willing to expose her child to such a risk.

Ashley shows up at Ray’s office with a split lip saying the stalker is back. Steve Knight is right behind her to make sure she doesn’t tell Ray he was the one who beat her. Lena interrupts to inform Ray of Kate’s murder. Ray sits stunned while Lena sends Steve and Ashley away. “I feel your pain”, Steve says on the way out.

Blaming Ed Cochran, Ray gets the sex tape out of the safe and sends Lena over to Stalkarazzi with it. He goes to the FBI office and attacks Cochran who assures him it was not him. That leaves Ezra who confirms that Avi killed Kate. Ray picks up the phone and reports the dead body buried at the Ruth Goldman Ovarian Cancer Center.

Ray then goes to Ashley’s where Steve has murdered the “stalker’ Bob LePecka who was only trying to protect Ashley. Steve wants Ray to get rid of the body. Ray makes Ashley tell him the truth, then tells Steve to get in the trunk of the car. After he does, Ray calls the police and hands the phone to Ashley, instructing her to tell the truth this time while crazy Steve hollers out “back into the womb — I love it” from the trunk.

It’s not Calabasas
Jim made one last play to get Abby by showing her his extra bedroom where he can protect her and the children from Cookie Brown. Abby broke down in tears and apologized for asking him to get rid of Cookie. She was packing a suitcase when the news of Cookie’s death came on TV and she realized that Ray took care of it and she no longer has to move.

Total body count: 4 – Kate McPherson, Cookie Brown and one bodyguard and Bob LePecka.
