Tennessee Beats Gonzaga: Kansas Returns to Top of College Basketball Poll

Tennessee again showed that it is a force to be reckoned with in college basketball by knocking off #1 Gonzaga 76-73 in Phoenix on December 9th. The Volunteers were led by Admiral Schofield with 30 points, 25 of which he scored in the second half. Schofield hit a three point basket with 24 seconds left to close out the scoring in the game and win it for the Volunteers.

Tennessee, ranked #7 in the AP Poll, improved to 7-1 on the season, while Gonzaga lost its first game of the season after opening with nine victories. The loss dropped Gonzaga to fourth in this week’s poll, while Tennessee moved up to third. Kansas (8-0) moved from second to #1, which is where the Jayhawks opened the season. Duke (9-1) moved up one spot from third to second, while previously #4 Virginia (9-0) dropped to sixth despite beating Morgan State and VCU in the last week. Michigan (10-0) remained at #5.

Tennessee is projected by many to win the Southeast Conference. They’ll put their #1 ranking on the line at Memphis (5-4) on December 15th.
