Lon Chaney, Sr. was one of the greatest character actors of all time. He was known as The Man of 1,000 Faces and James Cagney portrayed him in a movie by that name in 1957. Chaney is mentioned in Boardwalk Empire Season 3 in the episode Blue Bell Boy. That episode takes place in winter 1923. The previous year, Chaney had played Fagin in Oliver Twist (1922). He would play Quasimodo in “Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1923) but that film would not be released until September. One of the roles he is most famous for, as the Phantom of the Opera, came out in 1925.
