Rookie Corey Seager Playing an Important Role in Los Angeles Dodgers Success

Despite having 14 players on the disabled list, including Clayton Kershaw, and the underachievement of outfielder Yasiel Puig (who has been sent to the minors), the Los Angeles Dodgers find themselves in first place in the National League West as we head into the final weekend of August. After taking two of three from the second place San Francisco Giants, the Dodgers were 71-56 and had a two game lead in the West.

A big part of the Dodger’s success to this point has been the play of rookie shortstop Corey Seager. Seager is hitting .322, third best in the National League, with 22 homers and 61 RBIs. He’s tied for third in the league with 86 runs scored. Seager is a shoo in for Rookie of the Year honors in the National League (the Dodgers also have the best rookie pitcher in the N.L this season in 13-7 Kenta Maeda). Seager is the younger brother of Seattle Mariners’ third baseman Kyle Seager, who is also having a pretty decent season himself, hitting .286 with 24 homers and 83 RBIs.

Here’s Corey in action in the Dodgers’ 18-9 drubbing of the Cincinnati Reds back on August 23rd:

The Dodgers host the N.L Central leading Chicago Cubs over the weekend.

Although offensive production is important, although maybe not as much in a 9 run win, Seager made a great throw Sunday after sweeping into the hole towards third and firing a strong throw while still moving right to beat a racing Cub., and help preserve a 1-0 win. It proved a very solid play to say the least.
