RIP Baby the Rain Must Fall Hitmaker Glenn Yarbrough
Folk singer, Glenn Yarbrough passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at the age of 86 at his home in Nashville, Tennessee.
Yarbrough was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1930 but was raised on the East Coast. During his college years, he was inspired by Woody Guthrie to become a singer and was a founding member of the folk trio, The Limeliters, with Lou Gottlieb (bass violin), Alex Hassilev (banjo).
Yarbrough left The Limeliters in 1963 to pursue a solo career. His most popular recording was the 1965 single “Baby the Rain Must Fall,” reaching No. 12 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and No. 2 on its adult contemporary chart. The song, written by Elmer Bernstein, was used as the title and theme song of a 1965 film with the same title, starring Steve McQueen and Lee Remick.
The singer’s daughter, Holly Yarbrough Burnett, announced on Facebook that her father died comfortably at home surrounded by family members while listening to “Baby, the Rain Must Fall.”
Glenn Yarbrough is survived by his children Stephany, Sean and Holly, and his stepdaughters, Brooke and Heather.
