Red Sox Crush Yankees 15-7 behind Steve Pearce’s Three Home Runs

The New York Yankees went into a crucial four game series at Boston on August 2nd, trailing the American League East leading Red Sox by 5 1/2 games. Although the Yankees are in very good shape in terms of making the post season as a Wild Card, winning the division is a much better position to be in when playing October baseball.

The start of the series did not go well for New York. The Red Sox have been an offensive powerhouse this season, and that was on full display in the August 2nd game. First baseman Steve Pearce led the way with three home runs and six RBIs, Mookie Betts was 4 for 4 at the plate, and six Red Sox had two or more hits. When the carnage was over, Boston won 15-7. Red Sox starter Brian Johnson was not particularly effective, allowing four earned runs in five innings, but when your team scores 15, you probably will be the winning pitcher, and he was. The losing pitcher was reliever Jonathan Holder, who allowed seven earned runs in the fourth inning while not retiring a batter.

The Yankees and Red Sox will play each other six times in September; they will close the regular season with three at Fenway.
