Rangers Advance to Eastern Conference Finals in Stanley Cup Playoffs
After two periods of Game 6 of their Stanley Cup quarterfinal round, it was beginning to look like the Carolina Hurricanes would be on the verge of forcing a Game 7 against the Rangers after trailing New York 3 games to none. Carolina had won two in a row and led Game 6 3-1 after two periods.
But in the third, Chris Kreider came to the rescue. The Rangers winger scored a hat trick in the period to give New York the lead at 4-3. Barclay Goodrow added a late empty netter and the Rangers won Game 6 5-3, in Raleigh May 16th, taking the series 4-2. The Rangers are still in the hunt to be the first President’s Trophy winner (best regular season record) to win the Stanley Cup since the Chicago Blackhawks did it in the 2012-13 season. The Rangers were President’s Trophy winners in 2014-15 but lost in the Conference Finals that season to Tampa Bay.
New York will play the winner of the Boston Bruins—Florida Panthers series in the Eastern Conference Finals.
