Orioles Open Season with Three Game Sweep of Red Sox at Fenway

Only three clubs made it through baseball’s opening weekend without a loss, one of which was the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles haven’t had a winning season since 2016, but they got off to a good start. Baltimore got its first sweep in Boston since 2017. The Red Sox lost three straight at home to open a season for the first time since 1948, when they lost four in row. Since winning the World Series in 2018, the Red Sox have been in a decline, and were just 24-36 in last year’s Covid shortened season. But Boston has been a dominant club this century, so an inevitable drop off should be expected at some point, and we may be at that point.

The Orioles outscored the Red Sox 18-5 in the three game set. Center fielder Cedric Mullins was nine for 13 at the plate, while right fielder Anthony Santander and third baseman Maikel Franco each drove in four runs. Baltimore capped the sweep with this 11-3 rout on April 4th:

It’s early but, the Orioles showed their long suffering fans that they should at least be completive this season and not the division dormat.
