Oklahoma Overcomes 25 Point Deficit to Beat Undefeated Baylor

Undefeated and 13th ranked Baylor hosted once beaten and 10th ranked Oklahoma in Waco, Texas on November 16th in a battle of the Big 12 conference leaders. It started out as a romp by the Bears, who were blowing out the Sooners 28-3 in the second quarter. But the game didn’t end in the second quarter, and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts showed why a Sooner signal caller could win the Heisman Trophy for the third year in a row.

After falling behind by 25 points, Hurts threw four touchdown passes while Baylor was held to a field goal. The fourth TD pass with 5:25 left in the fourth quarter tied the game at 31-31. Gabe Brkic booted a 31 yard field goal with 1:45 left to give Oklahoma a 34-31 lead. Baylor’s final drive of the game ended when Sooners’ linebacker Nik Bonitto intercepted a Charlie Brewer pass with 40 seconds left to preserve Oklahoma’s biggest comeback in school history.

Hurts atoned for two lost fumbles and an interception with his four touchdown, 297 yard passing performance. He also led the Sooners in rushing with 114 yards on 27 carries. Oklahoma improved to 6-1 in the Big 12 and 9-1 overall. Baylor has an identical record. Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Texas all have 4-3 conference records, so with two regular season games left for both teams, it’s quite possible we’ll see a rematch in the Big 12 title game. With the win, Oklahoma moved up to #8 in the AP Poll while Baylor dropped to #13. Also in the Big 12, Iowa State upset #19 Texas 23-21, and West Virginia upset #24 Kansas State 24-20.

Besides Baylor, Minnesota also took its first loss of the season, 23-19 at Iowa. That left just three undefeated teams after games of November 16th–LSU, Clemson, and Ohio State.
