Ohio State Beats Michigan State to Cap Off Big Weekend of Upsets in College Basketball

Top ranked Michigan State (15-1 overall with a 14 game winning streak) traveled to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State (unranked but 12-4) on January 7th. The Buckeyes blew the Spartans out of the water, winning 80-64. The game was back and forth until late in the first half when the Buckeyes went on a 19-4 binge to close out the first half, capped off by an Andrew Dakich buzzer beating three pointer that made it 41-29 at the intermission.

The Michigan State upset was the culmination of a weekend of Top 25 teams going down in defeat. In the ACC, second ranked Duke lost to unranked North Carolina State 96-85. In a game that was not technically an upset, but which shows how the conference race is up for grabs, #8 Virginia beat #12 North Carolina 61-49. The Cavaliers are 14-1 overall, 3-0 in the ACC and are allowing the fewest points in Division I at just 52.5 per game.

Elsewhere, #5 Xavier went down in defeat at unranked Providence 81-72, LSU edged #11 Texas A & M 69-68, Auburn beat #22 Arkansas 88-77, and Colorado beat #14 Arizona 80-77. Finally, #23 Tennessee beat #17 Kentucky 76-65 for the Volunteers’ third straight victory over the Wildcats in Knoxville.
