New York Mets Off to Hot Start
The Washington Nationals were the default preseason pick to win the National League East, but if the early season play of the New York Mets is any indication, it won’t be an easy run to the post season. The Mets (10-3) open a three game set at home against the Atlanta Braves on April 21st, riding an eight game winning streak.
The Mets have been hitting reasonably well, but their pitching is what’s gotten them off to such a fast start. Starter Matt Harvey missed all of the 2014 season due to Tommy John surgery, but is 3-0 in his three starts with a 3.50 ERA with 24 strikeouts.
Veteran Bartolo Colon is also 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA, and Jacob DeGroom is 2-1 with an 0.93 ERA. Closer Jeury Familia has six saves in six opportunities.
There are a couple of injuries that could be issues going forward. Third baseman David Wright is on the DL with a hamstring problem. Catcher Travis D’Arnaud was off to a good start with his bat before going down with a fractured hand, and reliever Jerry Blevins is out with a broken forearm. So far, the Mets are handling the injuries well.
