Money Songs that Stick in Your Mind

The song that yesterday’s Final Jeopardy clue brought to mind was “Money, Money” (aka Money Makes the World Go Round”) from the 1972 film “Cabaret”, performed by Joel Grey and Liza Minelli.

It’s actually not the first song that I think of when it comes to songs about “Money.” It’s the second. The first one is always “Money (That’s What I Want),” by Barrett Strong. That was Motown’s very first hit song in 1959. It was later covered by many other Motown artists and many British bands, including the Beatles and Rolling Stones.

Then I went around and asked everyone I saw today, and anyone that called up, what is the first song they think of for the word “money.” Pink Floyd’s “Money” from 1973 came up the most.

From the early 20s set, we got some votes for “Save Dat Money” a rap song by Lil Dicky, featuring Fetty Wap and Rich Home Quan. I can’t find a “really clean” version. (There are videos advertised as “clean” that don’t bleep out “mf”!) If you would like to see the official 60 million+ views version, it shows Lil Dicky going around getting rich people to help him make his epic video as cheaply as possible.

Funny thing is everyone has heard the song “We’re in the Money” but no one brought it up.
