Mike Tyson Training for Possible Return to Boxing

Former Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson is interested in returning to the boxing ring. Tyson, who turns 54 at the end of June, last fought professionally 15 years ago, losing to Kevin McBride on June 11, 2005. It was his third loss in four bouts, and Tyson hung up the gloves after that, except for a series of four round exhibitions to raise money–for himself to pay off debts–in 2006. His pro record was 50-6. Recently, Tyson posted this training video on Instagram (it’s also on YouTube) where he says “I’m back”. And he looks like he’s plenty ready for the ring.

Tyson’s past personal life, which has included drug addiction and jail time for rape, has often overshadowed his accomplishments in the ring. He has rehabilitated his image somewhat in recent years. His goal if he steps into the ring again is to raise money for charities.

Tyson may ironically be remembered as much for a pair of losses he had in the ring as his is for being a heavyweight champ. In November 1996, Tyson lost by TKO to Evander Holyfield, and in the process, losing his WBA champion title. Tyson’s next bout was a rematch with Holyfield on June 28th, 1997. Tyson was disqualified at the end of the third round for biting both of Holyfield’s ears. Holyfield reportedly is interested in participating in an exhibition with Tyson.
