Masters Tournament Recap: Monday 5-8-23

Here are some more clues from the two matches in the 5/8/2023 Jeopardy! Masters Tournament game. Please don’t put the answers to these clues in the comments so people who missed the game can have a chance to answer them. It is okay to refer to them by category and clue value or by part of the clue.

FROM MATCH 1: The players got 3 of the clues in SPOONERISMS PAIRS:

(200) A grand overall scheme & a stucco guy
(400) A flexible entryway for a tabby & a thin hat
(600) A cliche meaning a devastating punch & an embarrassed black bird
(800) An unhappy sentimental song & an unpleasant Cobb or Waldorf
(1000) Contesting with a prevaricator & igniting a blaze

SPOONERISMS ANSWERS: show

A REAL FONT OF KNOWLEDGE (2000) Last name of 18th century Italian printer Giambattista, who designed an eponymous font that has a distinct Q

DESCRIBING THE NO. 1 ALBUM TITLE (1200) Despite the title, no help needed: sizzling sales for SZA

(2000) 2 of the tunes mentioned in the title are “Isn’t She Lovely” & “Pastime Paradise”

FROM MATCH 2: “G.P.” (1000) A character named Faith is the alter ego of this short story master who taught at Sarah Lawrence for decades

SING YOU A COUNTRY SONG (600) In Feb. 2023 Hardy & Lainey Wilson’s “Wait in” this vehicle was a hit, as was Lainey’s solo “Heart Like” this vehicle

FLYIN’ HIGHER THAN A JET AIRLINER (1000) This Aurora 7 astronaut, the second American to make an orbital space flight, is seen here with the first, John Glenn

BACK IN THE 12TH CENTURY (1200) The Crusaders captured this city on the Bay of Haifa & made it their capital

(2000) Under the Concordant of this German City, the Holy Roman Emperor conceded to the Pope the free election of bishops & abbots

SAME FIRST & LAST LETTER (1600) This verb can mean to weaken or disembowel, figuratively & literally

This TS was reversed. James’ response o “gutting” was accepted. Sam’s response of “gut” was treated as though it never happened. (I think he realized after he said “gut” that it didn’t match the category)

RELIGION (2000) In slang, “a whole” this means a long story, but in the Hebrew Bible it’s a scroll or the Book of Esther

Missed the show, but I can discern from the recap that the writers really ramped up the difficulty of the clues. As a long-ago NYer, I knew the connector between Brooklyn and Chinatown. Kudos to Sam. Also got the $1000 spoonerism, the “Isn’t She Lovely” album, and the Hebrew Bible whole.

Amy broke Andrew’s runaway on the last clue, but fortunately for Andrew, all 3 got it right, and Andrew beat Amy by 201 points.
