James Durbin Eliminated In May 12th Stupid Results Show
Ryan Seacrest opened up the Results Show (American Idol, Season 10, May 12th) with his usual dramatics: “Who will become a hometown hero and who will just be going home?” They got the highest top 4 vote ever, almost 72 million, according to him an we wondered how these superlatives always manage to happen. The Top 4 introduction followed with the camera panning to Casey Abrams in the audience to remind us that if he had been a bit wiser and a bit less growly, he’d be up there instead of Scotty McCreery.
James Durbin and Scotty then performed a duet of Brad Paisley’s “Start a Band.” James passed by his woman, Heidi, and leaned in to get a kiss. Afterwards, they sat with Ryan who asked James why he was in tears already, “What’s happening to you?” Ryan asked. James said when he got that kiss, he got Heidi’s nose right in the eye, causing his eye to water. Haley Reinhart and Lauren Alaina then performed Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder and Lead,” and Ryan called them “smokin’ hot.”
The idols were shown talking to their families on webcams. Oh, the poor idols, they haven’t been home in a month. Boo hoo. We never get that homesickness routine particularly since their families are in the audience most of the time. Then they showed Lady Gaga performing “You and I” (the same song she let Haley sing) with some concert footage.
Ryan gave us the first safe contestant, Lauren Alaina, which not only thrilled the 16-year-old Georgia peach but gave Steven Tyler a ‘thank goodness’ moment.
Enrique Iglesias sang a medley of “Dirty Dancer” with video footage of Usher in the background, and “I Like It” (the same video we chose for the May 8th birthday list when Enrique turned 35). Another Ford video was followed by Season 6 winner, Jordin Sparks with a performance of “I Am Woman,” with lyrics consisting mainly of the phrase “I am woman.” Jordin, who was only 17 when she won American Idol, is now a much slimmer and much sexier woman. She gave Steven Tyler a smooch as she passed by the judges’ table.
Steven’s video “It Feels So Good” also contained an awful lot of the same line and seemed interminable. “After seeing that, Randy and I want to come over this weekend,” Ryan said. Seriously? You’d think they’d be grossed out just watching it. We were.
Whoa! Haley is safe. All right!!! But what’s this? Scotty and James in the Bottom Two and James looking like he’s about to cry? Bad sign.
After a commercial break, we come back to James wiping tears away and Ryan saying “James and Scotty stand on this stage, their fate completely up in the air. “Gentlemen, good luck to you both. Dim the lights. Here we go. After the nationwide vote, the person with the shot at the finale is Scotty McCreery. Unfortunately, we lose James tonight.”
OMG! James stands there stunned as Scotty goes over to the girls. Randy said something to Jennifer Lopez, that seemed to include the word wow, but we’re not good lip readers. The judges all stand up and applaud, as Ryan says “James Durbin” and the camera pans to Heidi and back to James who is really crying now. “Truly an inspiration, take a deep breath,” Ryan says, as James struggles to compose himself. His journey montage is shown.
James told Ryan: “Man, I worked so damn hard to get here and, God, I was really hoping, you know, to get there, but you know I had a feeling today,” as J-Lo’s tear stained face was shown, “and, God, I did so much stuff that’s never been done before on this show, and so much stuff that … in my eyes, in my mind and what I believe is that I did what I came here to do — and that was to give metal a chance …,” and James then sang “Maybe I’m Amazed,” practically crying the whole time. We’re freaking amazed too.
Next week, those who tune in will get to see Ryan Seacrest blame the voters and ask the judges if America got it right. James Durbin’s fans are seriously pissed and probably won’t even be watch.
But what do you think? It sure seemed to us that James knew in advance he was going home.
