Gonzaga, Villanova, and Kansas All Win; Remain in Top 3 Spots in Poll

Gonzaga, Villanova, and Kansas came into the February 18th-19th weekend as the Numbers 1, 2 , and 3 in the AP College Basketball Poll, and all three won over the weekend and retained those rankings.

Gonzaga is breezing through its West Coast Conference schedule, and at 28-0, is the only undefeated Division I school. Gonzaga clobbered Pacific 82-61 on February 18th and has just two regular season games left against 12-16 San Diego and 19-10 BYU. The West Coast Conference Tournament starts March 2nd.

Villanova cruised to a 92-70 victory at Seton Hall on February 18th. It was the Wildcats’ seventh straight win, and improved ‘Nova’s record to 26-2. It’s a challenging week ahead for Villanova. The Wildcats host #22 Butler on February 22nd, and #23 Creighton on the 25th. Those two teams are second and third in the Big East behind Villanova.

In perhaps the top game of the weekend, #3 Kansas played at #4 Baylor in a key Big 12 conference matchup. On February 1st, the Jayhawks beat then #2 Baylor 73-68. This one went down to the wire. The Jayhawks’ Landen Lucas hit a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to give Kansas a 67-65 victory. The Jayhawks are now 24-3 overall, and 12-2 in the Big 12. Baylor fell to 22-5, 9-5 in the conference, but has lost four of six. That’s not the kind of momentum you want as tournament time approaches.
