Flyers and Golden Knights Earn Top Seeds in Stanley Cup Playoffs

The Vegas Golden Knights and Philadelphia Flyers both secured the top seeds in their conferences in the Stanley Cup playoffs with victories on August 8th. Both were a perfect 3-0 in the four team round robin competition.

Philadelphia beat Tampa Bay 4-1 to win the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers beat Boston 4-1 in the round robin opener, and then beat Washington 3-1 before beating the Lightning. There was some great work in the nets by Philadelphia in the series. Flyers goalie Carter Hart stopped 34 of 35 shots against Boston and 23 of 24 against Tampa Bay. The Philadelphia defense allowed just 17 shots on goal versus Washington, with veteran Brian Elliot stopping 16 of them. Philadelphia will the play Montreal Canadiens next.

Alex Tuch scored at 4:44 of overtime to give the Vegas Golden Knight s 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche. In the opener of the Western Conference round robin, Vegas beat Dallas 5-3, scoring four unanswered goals in the third period after the Stars scored three in the second period. The Golden Knights then beat the St. Louis Blues 6-4 with another big third period, scoring three goals after trailing 4-3 at the second intermission. The Golden Knights will play the Chicago Blackhawks next.
