Flames Take Team Record 62 Shots on Goal in 6-0 Rout of Blue Jackets
While 62 shot games are common in youth hockey, its pretty rare when an NHL team takes that many. The Calgary Flames had taken 59 shots twice in franchise history, but in their January 26th game at Columbus, that record fell as the team took 62 shots at Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins on the way to a 6-0 shutout victory. It was the most shots on goal by a visiting team in a regular season NHL game going back to the mid 50s when the shots on goal statistic began to be recorded.
Calgary Goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 23 shots, or roughly a third the number Merzlikins had to deal with. Matthew Tkachuk scored two goals and Johnny Gaudreau had three assists for the Flames.
