Matt found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “It Belongs in this Museum” under the $600 clue on the 18th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $4,400, $1,800 more than Elliott in second place. Matt bet $3,000 and didn’t know so he was WRONG.

On Museumstraat, “The Night Watch” & “The Milkmaid” show

Meaning honorable & worthy of respect or of being revered, it was an epithet applied to Saint Bede show

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ERNEST HEMINGWAY?

The dedication in “The Sun Also Rises” (1926) is not only to Hemingway’s first wife, Hadley, but also their son, “John Hadley Nicanor” aka Jack Hemingway. In “Death in the Afternoon” (1932), Hemingway wrote to his second wife: “To Pauline: with very much love (remembering many places) Ernest”. After he kicked Pauline to the curb, the dedication page in “For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940) said “This book is for MARTHA GELLHORN”. In “Across the River and Into the Trees” (1950) the simple dedication to wife #4 reads “To Mary with love”.

Pauline, it seems, got the sweetest dedication. After their breakup, in a letter to editor Maxwell Perkins, Hemingway blamed “a woman” for ruining F. Scott Fitzgerald but seemed to admit it was his fault for turning Pauline “mean”. “If you leave a woman, though, you probably ought to shoot her,” he concluded. In the end, it was himself he shot.

Matt got it right. He bet $7,999 and finished with $15,999.

Elliott went with Tolkien (1 marriage to Edith). He bet and lost the whole $8,800.

Deanna thought it was Mark Twain (1 marriage to Olivia). She lost $926 but won the game with the remaining $18,674. Deanna Bolio is the first finalist.

Final Jeopardy (9/18/2023) Elliott Goodman, Deanna Bolio, Matt Walks

Reversal: AMERICAN HISTORY ($1000) Native American leaders at the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn included Sitting Bull & this Oglala chief, killed the following year – Ken accepted Deanna’s response of Chief Joseph (Nez Perce, died in 1904), then had to inform her during the chat that she was losing $1000 because it was really Crazy Horse.

A triple stumper from each round:

IT BELONGS IN THIS MUSEUM ($200) The painting “Watson & the Shark” swims around in this Washington, D.C. museum

TALK LIKE A PIRATE ($1000) “It’s the world against us & us against the world”, says Errol Flynn as this sanguine title pirate

Yeah, I meant to comment on that big mistake Ken made – I mean, it’s right in front of him. It’s inexplicable.

Matt should have bet everything on his last Daily Double. That would have been his ONLY way to win the game at that point. People who are going to be on the show need to do game theory analysis in order to maximize their chances of success. What is the point of learning all the world capitals and not preparing proper wagering scenarios? It’s like going on a serious job interview without a tie. Players need to do everything to ensure success. After all, getting on Jeopardy is the chance of a lifetime.

  3. Howard says:

Had no clue on FJ, went with Grisham who’s a prolific author.

Those first two DDs were tough, but getting either one probably would have earned Matt a win. Carrie Hatchet? Ouch!

I was shocked Ken accepted Chief Joseph. Didn’t know the right answer, but I knew Joseph was from the Nez Perce here in the NW.

  4. Jacob Ska says:

I thought of Michael Crichton. The fj clue gave no timeframe. Imo it was left up to the contestants as well as viewers to pick a timeframe. Then after that select an author. As I said this morning on Spoiler Talk I’m normally not interested in the names of the spouses of authors.

  5. Jason says:

Well, it certainly wasn’t obvious to me, so, maybe walk that back a bit. I said “Henry Miller”.

The first half of the first round, I said, “Looks good”. However, second half, they retreated.

1/3 on DDs isn’t usually a path to victory.

Elliott reminded me of Wil Wheaton so much, in his looks, and his mannerisms and speech. I wonder if they are related.

  6. Rick says:

The FJ was all too obvious, and we were only surprised that two of the contestants just couldn’t come up with the correct response.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

We don’t see the scores going into FJ! Could you fix that please?
