TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS THE USS MAINE?
260 American sailors perished When the USS Maine battleship exploded in Havana Harbor on 2/15/1898. Cubans were fighting for their independence from Spain and the Maine was there to protect U.S. political and economic interests. Spain was immediately blamed for the disaster and newspapers ran with it, despite any conclusive evidence from a court of inquiry appointed by President McKinley. “Remember the Maine” was the battle cry that led the U.S. into a 6-month war with Spain, resulting in the U.S. gaining possession of Puerto Rico, the Philippines and other territories.
In 1976, Admiral Hyman Rickover conducted his own investigation into the matter and concluded that spontaneous combustion in the ship’s coal bins caused the explosion. However, history’s errors are not easily overturned. Not everyone bought Rickover’s theory and the controversy over the sinking of the Maine lives on. Still, I think anyone who has ever seen a cigarette lighter spontaneously explode might believe Rickover.
Sam thought it was the Challenger. He bet nothing, so he finished with $5,600.
Evan got it right. He bet everything he had and doubled his score to $19,299.
Aiden also got it. He bet $11,999 and won the game with $27,599. Aiden Orzech is the first Canadian Jeopardy! champ of Season 41.

All good comments. Evan just plainly missed too many. That’s rarely a way to win.
Now, I missed FJ. There are many points to this. First, Rickover was “father of the nuclear Navy”; Jimmy Carter served with him. So, I thought of a sub, and I thought of the USS Scorpion. Near the end of the music, I thought, “Was it the Thresher”? Now, I’ve always been a Navy man. I got screwed out of getting a commission, so I didn’t serve, but, still always Navy. But, in this case, what did I not do? “Remember the Maine!” (Or, actually, didn’t know it in the first place.)
As Kevin said, Aiden’s FJ wager was mystifying; $3401 was sufficient. That said, I was impressed that two of them got FJ; I was stumped. Was trying to recall what blew up in 1976, not 1898.
Very disappointed no one knew the Brown Bomber; the NYC venue; the three 3-letter verbs; the artist on “Nashville Skyline,” or the singer with Dolly and Emmylou. Also the 1964 Olympic sport & the one-letter-different capital. Very unusual for me to nail nine stumpers! $8200 worth.
This quick reference guide to heavyweight champs includes the Brown Bomber and it also has a video of Primo Carnera boxing with a real live kangaroo 🤣🤣🤣
A great game today! Regarding FJ, We all came up with the U.S.S. Thresher which was a U.S. submarine that sank on the eastern seaboard in 1963 (the sub imploded by over exceeding the maximum depth that it was designed to withstand).. As per the U.S.S. Maine, they had their panel of naval experts back then too, and they quickly concluded that Spain had sunk the battleship. This was what threw us in FJ.
VJ, Sam incorrectly responded “back pain” for the last DD, the correct response was “neck pain”, you have it the other way around.
Thanks, Rhonda. I appreciate any corrections today. I only got to listen to the game over the phone today because there was a chemical explosion in a nearby town and several shows were preempted. That’s why no pictures though I hope to catch up with them later.
Sorry for the mixups and thanks to my buddy Kevin, too!
You’re very welcome, VJ! And no need to apologize ever!
You always do such an amazing job and are so very appreciated for all the work you put into your site!
Sam actually stood pat at his 5,600. However, I think that Aiden wagered too much in FJ! because had he missed it would allow Sam back into contention needlessly.
