TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS THE MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE?

Just a few months shy of his 20th birthday, the Marquis de Lafayette arrived in America in 1777 to support the Americans in their fight for independence and was commissioned a volunteer Major General on George Washington’s staff. The French nobleman became widely revered for his contributions to American independence, including securing aid from France. By 1824, Lafayette was the war’s last living general. President Monroe invited him to back to America to help inspire patriotism for the upcoming 50th anniversary of independence. Colonial Williamsburg is commemorating Lafayette’s return with recreations of his return to America. See the places and dates here.

Fascinating facts: Lafayette was known as Washington’s adopted son. He named one of his own sons Georges Washington. In addition to many other gifts from his 1824-25 tour of America, Lafayette brought back a bag of dirt from Bunker Hill which was scattered over his coffin when he died in 1834.

Bethany got it right. She bet $6,801 and finished with $14,401.

Mark got it, too. He bet $7,999 and finished with $16,199.

Will came up with Alexander Hamilton, who died in that 1804 duel. (Maybe the 4 in 1824 triggered that.) Will lost $2,001, leaving him with $12,399. That admitted “bad call” handed the game to Mark who is now our new Jeopardy! champ.

I got FJ, but not much more. I noticed that Will seemed like a “cooler” (lower scoring games). Maybe Mark might turn that around.

Best wishes for your health, VJ! À votre santé! Gesundheit!

    • VJ says:

Thanks, Jason. I generally don’t think a player is going to go on a long streak when there are way too many stumpers as there were today and yesterday.

Sometimes, such a player makes it to 5 games and the ToC, whether by luck or strategy, but that won’t help them in the ToC imo. Take that category about colors yesterday. I couldn’t believe it!

  2. Kevin Cheng says:

There was one reversal that happened in the first round, could you add that please

    • VJ says:

Okay, Kevin. I saw Mark’s answer get rejected but I didn’t see the reversal because I skipped the commercials and the chat on my recording. I thought it was nitpicking a bit too much so I’m glad Mark got a reversal, even if it was only a $200 clue.

  3. Howard says:

Lafayette seemed to be the only choice. I quickly discounted the foreign-born Hamilton, who was 6 feet under by 1824. 2/3 DDs and most of the stumpers got me too. Did know the love god, the use of cats kingdom, and the 6-letter word for knife maker (that one not listed here as a TS, but it was).

    • VJ says:

I just added that one, Howard. I meant to go back and check but I took a little rest. I had a PET scan this morning and it’s usually not so bad. I don’t know what was different but this time I was really uncomfortable halfway through. Then I needed to play judge while my grandkids practiced their Native American school projects and I plumb forgot about checking.

      • Howard says:

No sweat, I hope whatever you’re tested for is not serious. My wife had several PET scans during the four years she had cancer.

      • VJ says:

Thanks, Howard. Hopefully, everything is okay. (I have been in remission since January). When the doctor asked me how I was doing, I said “I’m like a Bee Gees song” and she started singing “Stayin’ Alive” 🤣🤣🤣

Also, over the break, I had cataract surgery and it improved my eyesight dramatically so I’m pretty happy about that. (Think Johnny Nash 😁)

  4. Rick says:

Hmmmm……..a good game overall, and I certainly should have come up with Lafayette for FJ, but Alexander Hamilton? No, he died in a gun duel with Aaron Burr some 20 years earlier.
