TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS QUEEN VICTORIA?

Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent was born on May 14, 1819 at Kensington Palace. Her father, Edward, was the fourth son of King George III. At birth, she was 5th in line to the throne, behind George, Frederick and William, her father’s 3 older brothers and her father. King George III died in 1820 and so did Victoria’s father. The throne passed to George IV. Frederick died in 1827 and never was King. Now Victoria was second in line behind her Uncle William. The throne passed to William IV When George IV died in 1830. When William died in 1837, 18-year-old Alexandrina chose to go by her middle name when she became Queen. Click here for more fascinating facts about Queen Victoria

There have been quite a few Jeopardy! clues about Queen Victoria mentioning her uncle. The last one was the first Daily Double in Double Jeopardy! in the 6-24-2014 game.

Gabriel added II after Victoria and that made his response wrong, even though there was no II by that name. He bet and lost his whole $4,800.

Derek got it right. He bet $7,601 and finished with $16,201.

Jill bet the whole shebang and was supremely lucky to get an easy FJ! that she got right. She did not win the $32,400 she racked up, but won the first Finalist spot in the 2-day final matches at the end of the week.

Props to my fellow Oregonian Jill for her win, although her wager was over the top. I was a bit surprised she didn’t know what metal hematite was part of. And shocked no one could remember the “Trees” poet’s surname, which easily led to the related actor. Other stumpers were tough for this group and me, except for Ginger Baker, whom I saw perform in 1969 in his 2nd supergroup. His Facebook page is administered by his family.

So, haven’t seen it yet. It’s on here in 35 minutes. I wonder if I’ll recognize “recycled clues”!

    • Jason says:

Ok, didn’t recognize any retreads. But, Jill’s wager was… quizzical. She just needed $1001. Oh well, go big or go home! I was rooting for Derek.

I think, if ANY tournament needed the wild cards, this would be it.

We almost had an instant DD skunking to start the season.

  4. Kevin Cheng says:

I wasn’t expecting Jill to wager everything but it worked out well for her. She took a big risk and it paid off. Great way to start off Season 40.
