WHAT IS AN ARMADILLO?

Mental Floss has a list of 12 Odd Facts about armadillos that apply to the breed in general and also specific species. No. 8 is about the nine-banded armadillo, “the only species common in the U.S. It ranges throughout the American South, from Texas to the Atlantic and as far north as Nebraska. It is also common in Mexico. Though their name would suggest otherwise, nine-banded armadillos can have anywhere from seven to 11 bands in their armor.” German immigrants called the armadillos “Panzerschwein”, meaning “armored pig”. According to Wikitionary, the actual German word for armadillo is “gürteltiere” (belt animal) and before that, it was “armadill”.
