Final Jeopardy: Historic Women (7-3-24)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/3/2024) in the category “Historic Women” was:

In the 16th century, she changed the “ew” in her family name to a “u” to help her new French in-laws spell it more easily

New champ Kelly Proulx, a non-profit communications director from Billerica, MA, won $16,801 yesterday. In Game 2, she takes on these two players: Isaac Hirsch, a customer support team lead from Burbank, CA; and Dana Keane, an attorney from Sarasota, FL.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS MARY STUART (MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS)?

This info is No. 3 in the Mental Floss article “11 Things You Might Not Know About Mary, Queen of Scots”, although it says the name changed occurred sometime before Mary married Francis II. They link to a page in “The Royal Stuarts: A History of the Family That Shaped Britain” (2002). It is basically an aside in a paragraph about the Catholic French regarding Elizabeth I as illegitimate and proclaiming Mary Queen of England, Ireland and Scotland. Upon marriage, she became Queen of France, but not for long — Francis II died a year after they were married.

I misread the clue as “say” instead of “spell” and I honestly couldn’t imagine how “Stewart” would be that much different than “Stuart” in terms of French pronunciation. I ran them both through Google translate and both pronunciations came back as “stew-arrh.” However, in terms of French spelling things were different back in ye olde 1500s. W was not added to the French alphabet until the 19th century.

Kelly had no response. She lost $1,000 and finished with $7,000.

Dana also had zilch. That cost her $8,000 and left her with $300.

Isaac wrote down “uhhh”. He lost $615 and won the game with $19,185. Isaac Hirsch is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (7/3/2024) Kelly Proulx, Isaac Hirsch, Dana Keane

A triple stumper from each round. (Please don’t put the answers in the comments)

A LONELY WORD ($1000) Meaning grief or sadness, it precedes “Row” in a song by Bob Dylan & “Angels” in a book by Jack Kerouac

THE NAME DOESN’T MEAN ANYTHING ($400) The name of this technology that allows local area networks to operate without wiring or cables just sounds cool–that’s all

It wouldn’t have mattered at the end even if Kelly hadn’t rung in on that last clue in double jeopardy.

  2. Rick says:

I did somewhat above average during the game, and flubbed the FJ again. Actually, the first thing that came to my mind in FJ was Mary Queen of Scotts, but I instead went for Joan of Arc. You know, the name ‘Stuart’ is sometimes hard to recall. Accordingly, I’ll have to remember the actor Stewart Granger to help me recall when the queen comes up in Jeopardy next time.. Anyways, it was another fun game! By the way, happy Independences Day everybody! I’ll unfortunately miss today’s game because of the celebration.

  3. Jason says:

That Bridal Veil Fall was bogus. Out of over 20 Bridal Veil Falls on wiki, that is the ONLY “Fall”. Had they not used Niagara the clue above, there is a Bridal Veil FallS there.

I don’t know why, but, $500 wagers bug me.

I wonder if Kelly is any relation to E. Annie Proulx, who wrote “The Shipping News”, “Bark skins”, and “Brokeback Mountain”, among other things.

I was 3/3 on DD (I said aloud, to myself only, that Dana must not have been raised Jewish!). HOWEVER, for FJ, a big, fat NOTHING. Not even a clue. Nothing. Bupkis. Nada. Rien.

Oh well. We’ll see if Isaac can string two together!

  4. Ismael Gomez says:

And we got a triple stumper as today’s final was a tough one.

  5. Howard says:

Ouch, the addition of a letter “s” on the last clue made the game a runaway for Isaac, although ultimately it didn’t matter, so maybe the internet won’t blow up tonight. For the record, we have one here in Oregon by the same name, WITH the “s” at the end. (The writers did use the word “fall” in the clue, though.)

I knew these “youngstas” would never get the lonely word in the Dylan song. Disappointed no one knew the OAS, the rough equivalent of NATO in this area of the world. Only DD I knew was the “Pillow Talk” movie, which I never saw, but remember well. Co-star Rock Hudson was a closeted gay man who nonetheless starred in a number of romcoms. My mostly lame answer for Final was Elizabeth I.

Isaac said his dad was on the show in the early years. Could have been around the time of my appearance (1987-88, season 4).

    • VJ says:

Hah, the Pillow Talk star was way more out of their generation than Dylan. I saw Pillow Talk a long time ago but don’t remember much about it. I think of “Calamity Jane” and her performance of “The Deadwood Stage”. It sure beat Clint Walker’s!

  6. Ed Mitchell says:

    He said Goldfish. Its Goldfinch.

    • VJ says:

That was our mistake, Ed. I wasn’t looking at the screen on that one. Isaac definitely said goldfinch. It’s fixed and thanks for the heads up.

      • Ed Mitchell says:

I heard goldfish. I’ve sent the audio to over five people now without the video. Everyone has replied that they hear gold fish.

        • VJ says:

I don’t doubt it. That’s what I heard too, but I wasn’t looking. He was shown an image of a bird. Why in the world would he say goldfish?

          Captions on, it’s goldfinch.

    • Ren says:

      I agree 100 % with you!
      He said goldfish.
They undoubtedly just got it seeing in the captions as the were expecting to hear goldfinch.

  7. Kenneth D Schwartz says:

It’s seems obvious that the show would prefer women champions–maybe to even it out. Because of this, they “Protect” a woman winner by choosing weaker contestants–although everyone is smart etc. I’m sure they have a rating system. They also come up with categories that relate directly to the contestant. For example I have seen a librarian choose “Fiction for 800, Ken”. Don’t tell me that the questions are made up months in advance…they can always be changed as they know the contestants in advance as well.

    • VJ says:

We’re not gonna tell you the questions are made up months in advance. It just seems like once someone decides the show has a bias, they are going to see whatever they think supports that opinion.

The real question is if you think it’s a rigged show, why bother to watch it?

  8. Kevin Cheng says:

Isaac mentioned in the chat that his dad was on the show in the 80s and lost his game. Today Isaac won and he made his father proud.
