Final Jeopardy: Women Authors (7-29-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/29/2015), in the category “Women Authors” was:

This woman who passed away in 2015 wrote what is billed as Australia’s “Gone with the Wind”.

New champ Jonathan Marcus won $20,200 in yesterday’s game. Today he takes on these two players: Colby Potter, originally from Denver, CO; and Jennifer Morgan, from Southampton, NY

Round 1: Jonathan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “A Fortune 500 Company” under the $800 clue. He was in the lead with $4,600, $1,600 more than Jennifer in second place. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Jonathan finished in the lead with $8,200. Jennifer and Colby were tied in second place with $4,000 each.

Round 2: Jennifer found the first Daily Double in “I.C.” under the $1,600 clue. She was in third place with $6,000, $8,600 less than Jonathan’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Jonathan found the last Daily Double in “Independence Days” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $15,800, he had $1,400 more than Colby in second place. He bet $1,300 and thought it was Canada. That was WRONG.

On Sept. 21, 1981 this British colony became the last nation on the American mainland to gain independence. show

Jonathan finished in the lead with $18,100. Colby was next with $15,200 and Jennifer was in third place with $10,800.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS COLLEEN McCULLOUGH?

Colleen McCullough (6/1/1937-1/29/2015) was an Australian neuroscientist turned author, who specialized in tales of forbidden love. Her most famous novel was “The Thorn Birds,” set primarily in the Australian Outback, spanning several decades in the lives of the Cleary family. The youngest girl’s childhood affection for Father Ralph de Bricassart becomes something quite different when she comes of age. McCullough remarks upon the comparison of “The Thorn Birds” to “Gone With the Wind” in the above video. See all of Colleen McCullough’s novels on Amazon

Jennifer wrote down “Falk.” She lost her $10,786 bet and finished with $14.

Colby thought it was Lessing. He lost $15,000, dropping him to $200.

Jonathan didn’t have an answer. He bet it all and finished with zero. So that made Colby the new Jeopardy! champ with $200, “the smallest total this year,” per Alex Trebek. Pretty wild, huh? Colby got less than second or third place but he’s the one that is coming back tomorrow.

FJ Results: 7-29-15

Colby Potter is a policy analyst. During the chat, Colby talked about his experiences with broomball. Trebek mentioned that he played the game himself when he was much younger than Colby.

The Colorado Rockies Clue was technically incorrect. Troy Tulowitzki was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays 2 days ago.

  2. VJ says:

@Jacob, I thought that Jennifer would be the only one to get FJ but she looked slightly perplexed during the think music, like she wasn’t sure of her answer, then Aarggh!

As the game progressed I began to have my doubts. Especially when I heard some of the odd responses.

  3. Dalton Higbee says:

I’m kind of not happy about this game. I think Colby tied Dan Pawson’s $200 for one of the lowest one-day totals back in the third game of 2008. The lowest one-day total was $1 by Darryl Scott on January 19, 1993.

    • VJ says:

thanks for the info, Dalton. I was hoping Colby would win. Jonathan’s DD bets were irritating me, but on that last one I guess it was just as well that he bet low since he thought Canada gained independence in 1981.

      • jacob ska says:

That was a hilarious response. LOL

        • Cece says:

I’m glad you brought up the Canada independence thing, VJ – that was embarrassing, to say the least. And on the bets, he did the same as yesterday — bet low on the DD’s and all in FJ.

Tonight, had he bet the normal $12,301 in FJ, he would’ve finished with $5799 and won a 2nd game. SMH.

        • VJ says:

I saw a question the other day, I think it was on Twitter, asking why they clap for the contestant when they get a DD, and saying they should only clap if the person gets it right. Idk if anyone answered it but I always assumed they clap because it’s a chance to get a leg up on the other players. I understand a low bet when the player isn’t confident in a category, but Jonathan didn’t seem to make his DD bets based on his confidence. It just didn’t seem like he saw the DDs as opportunities.

        • Cece says:

I agree with you. I don’t think he put much thought into how much to wager on the DD’s, or FJ for that matter.

I was curious as to why Alex rejected a contestant answer of “coolant”, in lieu of “antifreeze”. I thought they were the same thing and my bf thinks so too (well, he knows as much about car stuff as I do).

        • VJ says:

maybe someone else can help. I know less about cars than you and your bf combined. LOL.

        • Cece says:

I have to see what the exact clue was – I’ll wait until tomorrow and check J!Archive. Maybe something in the clue, because I can almost picture the bottle I last purchased and it says Antifreeze/Coolant.

        • VJ says:

This is the clue in Cold Science

$400 – Proteins in Antarctic fishes act as a type of this, like Prestone in your car

        • Cece says:

Thanks, Vj — you didn’t have to do that. Now I know why coolant doesn’t apply, as the proteins in the fish prevent it from freezing only. I just don’t think the writers should have made the analogy with Prestone, as it both cools and prevents the cooling system from freezing.

          Just saying. :):)

        • VJ says:

I agree on both counts. The fish are already very cool and they shouldn’t have used the analogy. :):)

Havent seen a $200 win on J! in ages. Keith WIlliams will get another coronary at the FInal Wager

    • jacob ska says:

You got that right. I can’t wait to see Keith’s video tonight. The winner got $200, 2nd place $2000, 3rd place $1000. Weird!!!

  5. Leena says:

Hello, people I AM BACK! A message for Keith, trust me one, you ain’t gonna be happy at all. At least for Colby, he has a good chance of starting for season 32! He did play well. If only he could’ve won the Teacher’s Tournament. Man, JUST IMAGINE, 14 bucks as SECOND OUT OF THIRD PLACE! Keep your cool, Keith, please. For me.

  6. Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

What bad betting in FJ! Colby should have bet 6401. Jonathan was dumb to bet it all.

    • Leena says:

True, very true. I’m not a new Fikkler (well, i don’t know what “the term for it” is. VJ.)

    • Eric S says:

Only if he knows Jennifer doesn’t know game theory. She should have bet little and won

    • William Weyser says:

Maybe all 3 players must have had confidence with the category, or were a little too confident, but there’s no point in Jonathan, Jennifer and Colby wagering far too much.

  7. jacob ska says:

This was not an exciting game to watch. $200 has to be the lowest score that I can remember seeing for a returning champion on Jeopardy. I may be wrong.
