WHAT IS “DON JUAN”?

Lord Byron, Romantic English poet, became famous at age 24 after the publication of “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage” in 1812. He soon became infamous for his scandalous lifestyle and spent many of his remaining 12 years abroad. He began work on his epic poem “Don Juan” in 1818 and was working on the 17th and last canto in 1824 when he was struck down by fever and died in Greece at the age of 36. “Don Juan” is a satirical poem with a reversal of the Don Juan legend. In it Don Juan is the pursued more than the pursuer, quite possibly an intentional reflection of Byron’s own escapades.

The Final Jeopardy! clue on 6/15/2015 was about the pronunciation of Don Juan: “He rhymed the title character of one of his best-known poems with “drew on,” “threw on” and “ruin”

Toula got it right. She bet $4,790 and finished with $9,590.

Nik went with “The Ancient Mariner.” That cost him $599 and left him with $9,601.

David wrote down Leviathan. He lost $5,601 and finished with $9,199. That made Nik Berry the new Jeopardy! champ.

I had ZERO idea, so, I answered the “Ballad of J. Alfred Prufrock”. Boy howdy, was I completely wrong, in SO many ways. First, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”. Second, not unfinished. Third, 20th century.

    As I say, ZERO.

I do think this was a bit of a toughie.

    • VJ says:

@Jason, now you’ll remember that it’s “Love Song” in the future, if it comes up in FJ! (so far, it hasn’t)

      • Jason says:

Well, that wouldn’t be the first time I learned something from Jeopardy! The first that comes to mind is Lorraine Hansberry! However, there are many more!

Good group tonight, and a very wise final wager by Nik (I’d have gone with $4601 but his was superior, locking out Toula). I had no clue on the final, but near the end of the music came up with “Don Juan in Hell” which unfortunately is the wrong title and a different opus entirely.

Toula started out strong but faded till near the end when she recovered. I really thought she’d hit that DD about the 2-word coffee phrase. She had the right idea.

I lucked out on the soaked coffee beans and remembered the movie about the station wagon. Was hoping someone (especially Toula, who is in the publishing biz) would know the author of “Wild.” She got her master’s in creative writing from my alma mater. I went to see her a few years ago at our gigantic bookstore

Howard, I had no idea on this fj clue either but figured “Toula” would get it correct. She has a lot of experience in international publishing consulting so this fj clue was in her wheelhouse. I was really hoping she would win but it wasn’t meant to be. 🤔

  3. VJ says:

Byron was the oldest of the 3 Romantic poets who died young in the early 19th century. He died 2 years after 29-year-old Shelley and 3 years after 25-year-old John Keats.

  4. Kevin Cheng says:

That was an exciting and a close finish. I thought that Toula was gonna win despite being the only player to get FJ! correct but Nik made a small bet to locked out Toula and it worked out well for him. Well that’s Thursday and we’ll see what Nik does tomorrow on the last game before the season finale week.
