NEITHER contestant left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.
WHAT IS “INVISIBLE MAN”?
The quote in the clue is an excerpt from Albert Murray’s essay on Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man” (1952), first published in Murray’s “The Omni-Americans: New Perspectives on Black Experience And American Culture” (1970). Ellison’s novel features an unnamed narrator describing his struggle for identity and feelings of invisibility as a black man in America, despite going through a series of events that would probably get him a few million subscribers on YouTube nowadays. He winds up in a manhole in New York– the 3 words replaced with an ellipsis in the clue are “in New York singing”. The song is Louis Armstrong’s “Black and Blue”, an early racial protest song from the 1920s.
This YouTube from The Art Institute of Chicago shows Gordon Parks’ photos paired with quotes from Ellison’s “Invisible Man”, including the famous “manhole” photo.
Marisa went with Kerouac’s “On the Road”. She lost $712 and finished with $4,488.
Scott didn’t have a response. He lost half his money, cutting this win down to $20,000. Scott’s 11-day total is $282,101.

A triple stumper from each round:

Rough day for me. 1/3 on DD, and missed FJ. Didn’t even have a clue. Anything I know of Ellison is from Jeopardy!, anyhow. Never read anything by him.
I did get half the TS, though.
I’ve spoken before of “coolers”, but I think Scott is a “heater”. After the first round, his games seem to have a high amount of money among the 3 contestants. It looks like a recurrent thing, to me.
Oh, the humanity! That game was over in the first minute. Final was too tough, and a subtle reminder that “Invisible Man’ and “The Invisible Man” are different titles. First DD a cinch, 2nd impossible. Was somewhat familiar with the 3rd one but couldn’t think of it in time.
Beat them on the Joe Buck clue (saw the film as soon as it came out); the Puccini opera; and the timely flowers.
Will Scott have to wait extra long to participate in TOC since he us carrying over into next season??
We don’t know if he’s gonna carry over. There are 6 more games to go.
Like Monday, today is not that day for a humongous payday. Maybe, tomorrow will be the charm.
40,000 is the highest score going into FJ! this season. Scott would have set the new 1 day record payout score this season if he gotten it right. Second time this week that one player didn’t make it to FJ! because this game has belonged to Scott. He will be back tomorrow for the last game of the week before the season finale week.
Unfortunately, Chad was the player who was really victimized by Scott. He’ll get the positive 2k for finishing as a runner-up.
How do you figure that? Chad got too deep in the hole all by himself.
Well VJ, Chad tried to get back on the plus side but he kept getting beat by Scott on the buzzer. You could tell that Chad knew some clues but Scott was dialed in on the buzzer.
I saw something about that icy vacation spot years ago. It made a big impression on me as one thing I would definitely not do, even if I had that kind of money to throw around!
Scott really excelled today. He’s been quite good at the lit categories so I guess that’s what led him to bet big in FJ! I was hoping he would stand pat and go over $300K though.
