Final Jeopardy: Doing Business Internationally (7-1-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/1/2015), in the category “Doing Business Internationally” was:

This U.S. retailer’s 133 Canadian stores closed in 2015; its CEO said, “We missed the mark…taking on too much too fast.”

2x champ Brandon Powell has won $38,788 so far. In his bid for a third win, he is up against these two players: Alex Irvine, originally from Ypsilanti, MI; and Rena Traube, originally from Brooklyn, NY.

Round 1: Brandon found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double. a video, in “Men in Uniform” under the $800 clue. He was in second place with $3,800, $3,200 less than Alex in the lead. He bet $2,200 but drew a blank so he was WRONG.

Alex finished in the lead with $8,800. Brandon was second with $1,600 and Rena was last with zero.

Round 2: Brandon found the first Daily Double in “Non-Talkative Show Biz Folk” under the $2,000 clue. He had just taken a giant step in catching up to Alex by getting every other clue in the category right and that put him in second place with $10,400. Alex had the lead with $4,400 more. Brandon bet $4,400 and he was RIGHT.

Calling him a “character” is a bit of a stretch, but Tom Hanks made him/it a close pal in a 2000 movie. show

Alex got the last Daily Double in “The Marquis de Lafayette” under the $2,000 clue. It was the last clue on the board and he was in the lead with $20,000, $7,200 more than Brandon in second place. He bet $5,000 and said “Lexington & Concord.” That was WRONG.

Lafayette was buried in Paris with soil taken from the grounds of this 1775 battle, the bloodiest of the Revolution. show

Alex finished in the lead with $15,000. Brandon was next with $12,800 and Rena was in third place with $7,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS TARGET?

As the video shows, Target made its announcement that its Canadian operations would be shut down in mid-January 2015. In a Q&A on in the News & Features section of Target’s website, Brian Cornell, the company’s Chairman and CEO, was asked what the primary challenges in Canada were. His response included the quote in today’s clue: “When Target Canada first opened, we knew that many Canadian consumers had already shopped our U.S. stores and had deep admiration for the brand. But, we missed the mark from the beginning by taking on too much too fast….” (A Bullseye View)

Rena wrote down Wal-Mart. That cost her $7,401 and she finished with $199.

Brandon had the same response. He bet $7,200 and wound up with $5,600.

Alex got it right. He bet $11,000 so he won the match with $26,000 and he is the new Jeopardy! champ.

FJ Results: 7-1-15

Alex is a writer. During the chat he talked about a hiking adventure in Maine with his smart dog and his dumb dog. The dumb one fell in the canyon, floating away down the rapids. Alex leaped in to the rescue and the smart dog ran 2 miles to get help.

2 years ago:: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Saints on the Map”

In population, it’s the largest U.S. city with the same Spanish name as a current Western Hemisphere capital. show

Correction alert for this post: “Round 2: Alex found the first Daily Double in “Non-Talkative Show Biz Folk” under the $2,000 clue. Admin: There was only Alex playing in this game. Please replace “Brandon” where appropriate.

If this is not the preferred protocol for addressing mistakes and how to correct them, please let me know and please delete my comment once you make the necessary corrections/clarifications. I am not trying to play “Gotcha” but do want to help keep the page accurate. I’m new to fikklefame. Cheers!

That’s fine, Adam. Thanks for the heads up. I do get the players mixed up now and then. Funny, when Brennan was on, I kept wanting to call him Brandon.

This was a great, fast moving episode. Even Rena who was hurting bad at the beginning of DJ went on a quick run that made me think she could win it as much as anyone in spite of her SJ showing, but she went away as quickly as she came on strong.

“Missed the mark” was the clue here.

    @vj, CONGRATS.

I figured they would go for JCP, WMT, or KMART.

Target was in and out of Canada so fast (2 yrs) a person really had to read the business news which most people don’t unfortunately.

    Good for you Alex. Congratulations.

    Btw, another Alex champion. Amazing!!

Btw, Sony stores also left Canada this year. 2015 a bad year for Canada. Other stores left as well.

Nicely done VJ. The streak is dead, long live the streak.
People think about Wal-Mart too damned much.

      • jacob ska says:

@Eric, that’s because WMT is the largest retailer. It’s everywhere you go in the states and don’t forget about all of those fights in its stores that keep it in the news. LOL

On the serious side the Walton family is the wealthiest family in the world per Forbes Magazine. If Sam Walton were still alive he’d be worth more than Bill Gates to the tune of ~$100 billion. What a tune. 🙂

    • VJ says:

      thanks guys 🙂

@Jacob, how about that Sophia Loren response to the Brigitte Bardot clue? I was expecting Trebek to say the responses have to start with B and Sophia Loren is Italian but he left that second part off. :):)

@vj, I fell out laughing. People don’t pay attention to category titles in clues which keeps me amused. But these are 2 women who are nothing alike. Hence, the humor.
