Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/15/2018) in the category “Island Names” was:

Deirdre finished in the lead with $19,800. Diana was next with $11,600 and Jon was in third place with $5,600.
NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Portuguese explorer Afonso de Albuquerque didn’t actually discover Ascension Island but he is credited with naming it after finding it on Ascension Day in 1503. In Acts 1 in the Bible, the ascension of Jesus into heaven occurs 40 days after he rose from the dead (Easter). To Catholics in many countries, it is a feast day and “holy day of obligation” (you have to attend mass).
You can read more about the history of Ascension Island, and how it came to be a British overseas territory, on Mysterra.org. I’d just like to point out that, geographically, it is in the South Atlantic, roughly 1,000 miles from the western coast of Africa– not exactly “off the coast.” Surely, that’s what threw the players off.
Jon went with Madeira. He lost everything but a dollar.
Diana was going for Seychelles when she ran out of time. She lost her $6,001 bet, finishing with $5,599.
Deirdre thought it was Madagascar. She lost $3,401 but won the game with the $16,399 she had left. Deirdre Thomas is the new Jeopardy! champ.
A triple stumper from each round:
INVENTIONS ($1000) In 1846 Elias Howe took this invention to Washington to apply for a patent
1-WORD PLAY TITLES ($1200) Talking giant lizards show up in this “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” author’s play “Seascape”

Deirdre’s father who was a TofC finalst in 1969, not 1968 as she said, was Dr. Nick Rorick, who lost the TofC to Jay Wolpert, who became a game show producer and screenwriter for Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
so that was the year after she was born.
@Jacob, yes, I indicated my uneasiness with the “off the coast” wording this morning but I ignored it because I thought the 40 days after Easter angle was easy. I mean, I don’t think you have to be Christian to know it — you could be somebody who likes to look up special days and holidays or maybe a calendar collector. 😉

Who won jeopardy on Monday
@Aidan, look on Jeopardy.com or you can find all the game recaps for this week here
This week has been rough on the contestants, VJ. But after you watched this game, what would you take away from this? I mean like the learning experience of the contestants and their playing strategies? Furthermore, I wanted to see another triple solve but it never happened. Oh well, Diana did her best today but still we shall see how Dierdre does on monday if we do get another 5 time winner.
@John B, I agree, with you, but remember with the summer break looming closer and closer, we shall see what the rest of June and all of July brings us. So far we have 8 people with big wins and if we get 5 this year, and two for september, maybe the toc might stay for november 2018, but we shall see.
@John B., Ascension Day is not a Federal holiday in the U. S. Although Christmas & Easter are holidays Ascension Day is barely mentioned nationwide. Unless a school has religious affiliation don’t even think about discussing religion. Separation of Church & State rules. Also VJ stated in her recap and gave her opinion on why the contestants missed the fj clue.
@John B., even though some us predicted 2 correct I’m not surprised at the ts. People are turning away from religion. According to the Daily Mail, March 2018, in Austria your home country 37% of young people have turned away from religion. You can google it to fact check my source.
@Jacob I know you are right. I just have to go across the street to Safeway and everybody over the age of 5 is either on a cell or playing some video game. Still, the important part of the clue was “40 days after Easter” BUT EVERYBODY WENT FOR THE “AFRICA” DISTRACTION. An understandable mental lapse, clues have been misread before, but all 3?? And I bet had the players been 30 years older, they would have gotten it.
Have a great weekend and I hope you like soccer a little bit?? Then you are in for some really special games, especially in the latter stage of the WC. Take care!!
“Surely you jest!” (Charles Emerson Winchester III)
This had NOTHING to do with geography. All the players had to ask themselves “What happened 40 days after Easter?” (Like 50 days after Easter you have Pentecost)
Maybe I was at an advantage here, growing up in Austria, where not only religion/bible study is mandatory from first grade till the end, but where “Christi Himmelfahrt” and also “Fronleichnam”= Corpus Christi are federal holidays and always on a Thursday.
You don’t have to be Jewish to know when Hanukkah is or a Muslim to know when Ramadan is. It’s on your calendar.
Well, a fitting end to a really weird 3-3-3-0-0 week.Aside from the FJ results, what are the chances that a player gets all 6 DDs in back to back games? And we have yet another champion, congratulations to Deirdre.
@John B., don’t be too hard on the contestants on today’s ts. Have a good weekend. Aloha.
@ Jacob, You are right. And things can only get better I guess….. I appreciate our exchange.
