Final Jeopardy: U.S. Business (6-11-25)

The Final Jeopardy question (6/11/2025) in the category “U.S. Business” was:

The “Stencil” logo released in 1979 for this chain used only 2 colors, one of which emphasized “energy” & “value”

New champ Matt Massie, an attorney orig. from South Charleston, WV, won $30,000 yesterday. In Game 2, he takes on these players: Jan Zimmerman, a retired elem. school music teacher from Newark, DE; and Rob Forrester, a stagehand from Portland, OR.

Round 1 Categories: Lookin’ Back, Texas – Mother’s Milk – Do the Write Thing – Sometimes You Just Gotta Know Stuff – “Old” Songs – Woe-pourri

Matt found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Do the Write Thing” under the $1,000 on the 12th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $4,400. Everyone else was in the red. Matt bet $2,000 and drew a blank so he was WRONG.

In 1910 German pen-trepreneurs trademarked this brand name for writing instruments of “peak” quality show

Matt finished in the lead with $4,400. Rob was second with $1,000 and Jan was last with $800. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Countries That Start With a Vowel – Literature – Change an E to an I – Same Last Name – Actors & Their Roles – Medieval Europe

Matt found the first Daily Double in “Countries that Start with a Vowel” under the $1,200 clue on the 15th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $12,000, $3,800 more than Rob in second place. Matt bet $6,000 and he was RIGHT.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS HOME DEPOT?

The Home Depot logo was created in 1979 by Canadian brand designer, Don Watt. One of its nicknames was “Stencil”, because that is the name of the Microsoft font used in the white lettering. The other nickname was “Big Orange” for the background color. Don Watt had a background in color psychology and it is said he chose the bold orange color to symbolize value and energy.

Other reasons floating around: Watt thought the employees could wear an apron and the color orange would stand out. Also, and this is the one that makes the most sense to me, the color orange is often seen on construction sites outdoors, reminding customers where to go for home improvement products.

Jan thought it was Staples. She lost $3,199 and finished with $1.00.

Rob went with K-Mart. That cost him $5,999 and left him with $601.

Matt also had K-Mart. He only lost $1,000, winning the game with the remaining $28,000. Matt has a 2-day total of $58,000. That’s 2 runaway in as many days and 2 more days left in the week.

3/3 on DD, but missed FJ. I said “Apple”. It seemed kinda, I don’t know, niche, maybe? I mean, I have to go to the Depot website to be reminded of their logo. Also, being 2 colors didn’t really help. I don’t know, maybe I’m the dope!

Each of the players was a slow talker, so, I wasn’t surprised when they didn’t finish the second board.

As to the Rod Stewart version of the Isley Brothers song, I concur, VJ. Here in Buffalo, though, the biggest song by the Isley Brothers is “Shout”. “The Bills are makin’ it happen now. Yeah yeah yeah yeah!” In fact, it was licensed by the Bills.

It’s also done by U of Oregon fans at football games, in the third quarter I think. I don’t recall if it was in “Animal House,” but that was filmed at U of O.

Matt is sure impressive and looks to be tough to beat. Not ashamed to bet large on DDs too.
DDs/FJ left me stumped. Only listed stumper I knew was the Stewart/Isley song.

  3. Debra Choquette says:

Matt won $30.000 on Tuesday and $28,000 on Wednesday that adds up to $58,000.

  4. Judith Barr says:

I don’t know who you got to add up the totals, but they should go back to school, and learn how to add. In today’s program (June 11th, Matt’s total was $28,000. On Tuesday’s program, he won $22,001.- That makes it $50,001.00, NOT$58000. This is not the first time, they have screwed up, the totals. Also, they use different names for the contestants.

    • Vj says:

It was Jackie who won the $22,001 on Monday, Judith.

It’s true we make mistakes sometimes and my math skills leave a lot to be desired, but we get a lot more right than wrong! And we have good manners.

  5. Ismael Gomez says:

And we got a triple stumper in the final since today’s final was tough.

  6. Olympia says:

You have yesterday’s scores on the early spoiler instead of today’s

  7. VJ says:

I thought Rob would get a reversal on his response to the $1000 Rod Stewart song clue. The clue asked for the title object, not the title (see the Sneak Peek clues on p. 2).

That’s really an Isley Brothers song but I think the reason they went with the Rod Stewart cover is because the original has (is Weak for You) in the title. So maybe they did want the full title but the clue was worded badly.
