Final Jeopardy: The Civil War (5-4-22)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/4/2022) in the category “The Civil War” was:

A Union soldiers’ song said Gen. McClellan, who let a Confederate army escape after this battle, “was too slow to beat ’em”

21x champ Mattea Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, won $506,584 so far. In Game 22, she takes on these two players: Kelly Flynn, a high school English teacher from Exeter, NH; and Jaime Sisson, a fair and responsible banking manager from Madison, MS.

Mattea finished in the lead with a runaway $28,400 and Jaime was next with $6,600. At negative $2,600, the game was over for Kelly. All clues were shown.

BOTH contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHAT IS ANTIETAM?

The little ditty referenced in today’s Final Jeopardy! clue was sung to the tune of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” by the soldiers of the Army of the Potomac. It takes a poke at Generals George McClellan, John Pope, Ambrose Burnside, Joseph Hooker and George Meade. Here is the particular verse that skewers McClellan:

“Then Mac was recalled* but after Antietam
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Then Mac was recalled but after Antietam
Abe gave him a rest, he was too slow to beat ’em
And we’ll all drink stone blind —
Johnny fill up the bowl”
*It was McClellan’s second time at this command

For Civil War buffs, the memoir of Parmenas Taylor Turnley is interesting reading. He was a graduate of the West Point class of 1846 along with future Union Generals George McClellan, George Pickett, Jesse Lee Reno and future Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. Many historians have mined Turnley’s personal recollections and opinions of various Civil War figures. Here’s a quote on McClellan: “McClellan was very far from being a great man or a strong man, yet he was superior to the political cabal in Washington City….”

Jaime bet everything she had and finished with $13.200.

Mattea added “(because it rhymes?)” to her correct response. She didn’t bet anything so she won the game with $28,400. Her 22-day total is $534,984.

Please take complaints about Mattea’s personality to Jeopardy’s Facebook page or to Twitter. Go see what happens and you’ll know why.

Comments about runaway games being boring and monotonous are okay.

In the latter part of March 2022, I was in travel status and could not watch jeopardy but I I googled jeopardy New York Times for the final jeopardy clue and the exact one of today, May 5, 2022 came up… what’s the deal? I think an injustice has been done. Alex would never have allowed it.

Also a response mattea gave today was ranger instead of Texas Ranger. She was not specific as others are required to be. ???? Doesn’t appear equal treatment is being given. And the final question of 5/5/2022 should be thrown out!

As to your first question, it looks like a data entry error by some employee at Jeopardy. Mistakes happen. I’m pretty sure Alex never had any oversight over such technical matters, so I don’t think your point is correct.

As for your latter point, that clue contained the phrase “these Texas lawmen.” When part of a clue’s response is included in the clue, that included part need not be also included in the contestant’s response. That’s very standard Jeopardy rules.

Exciting – a zero dollar bet. Added excitement – giving the reason for your response. In the words of US Marshal Sam Girard, “I don’t care!”

Kelly was her own worst enemy. She rang in a few times when she just should not have.

    Oh well! Hope springs eternal!

  3. Collin Ho says:

Ken said Rick Astley during Mattea’s response in “Final Jeopardy!”.

  4. Curtis Jacobsen says:

The judges didn’t catch the mispronunciation of Anais. Mattea said Ah nah nees instead of the correct Ah nah ees

  5. Ismael Gomez says:

Sorry that the last daily double wasn’t kind to Kelly.
