Final Jeopardy: Sports & The Movies (5-31-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/31/2023) in the category “Sports & The Movies” was:

A Geena Davis Inst. study found shortly after a 2012’s franchise film’s release, women’s participation in this sport rose 105%

New champ Ilhana Redzovic, an investment associate from Chicago, IL, won $20,400 yesterday. In Game 2, she takes on these two players: Kyle Marshall, a library branch manager from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and Lisa Gargiulo, a middle school English teacher from Brynn Mawr, PA.

Round 1 Categories: Countries in Short – 8-Letter Words – The Natural Order – Around the USA – Dude, Here’s Your Car – Andrew Lloyd Webber

Ilhana found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Dude, Here’s Your Car” under the $2,000 clue just before the commercial break. She was the only one on the board with $2,200. Ilhana bet $2,200 and said aluminum. That was WRONG.

Lamborghini’s Sesto Elemento was named for its pioneering use of this, from which much of the car is made show

Kyle finished in the lead with $2,200. Ilhana was in second place with $1,800 and Lisa was last with negative $600. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Presidential Doin’s – Numerical Literature – Landmarks of Great Britain – Famous Siblings – Barriers & Dividers – “V”erbs

Kyle found the first Daily Double in “Landmarks of Great Britain” under the $1,600 clue on the 6th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,800 now, $1,200 less than Ilhana’s lead. Nathan bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

It’s been peering down on the capital from its 32 rotating capsules for 2 decades show

Ilhana got the last Daily Double in “‘V’erbs” under the $2,000 clue with 6 clues left. She was in second place with $7,000 now, $3,200 less than Kyle’s lead. Ilhana bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

From Latin for “love”, it means to regard with devotion or reverence show

Ilhana finished in the lead with $10,400. Kyle was second with $10,200 and Lisa was last with $4,600. All clues were shown.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ARCHERY?

First, I’d like to point out that Geena Davis was not in “The Hunger Games” (2012), which was the first film of that franchise. So if you were one of many who thought of the (much) earlier “A League of Their Own” (1992), don’t feel bad!

The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media is a non-profit founded by Davis to advocate for equal representation of women in the media. The Institute has some articles under their “archery” link. One reveals that Davis is a proficient archer who almost made the 2000 U.S.Olympic Team. From the Institute’s website: “Our study is the first to examine whether archers in popular film and television programs inspire people to take up the sport,” said Geena Davis. “Both The Hunger Games and Brave were released in 2012; participation in archery rose 86% from 2013 to 2014, with women’s participation increasing 105% during that period of time! It’s not surprising to me that Hollywood’s depiction of inspiring female archers has contributed to the sport’s phenomenal growth — it’s another demonstration of the powerful impact fictional characters can have on girls’ aspirations…”

Lisa chose softball. She lost $4,599 and finished with $1.00.

Kyle went with baseball. That cost him $9,800 and left him with $400.

Ilhana came up with tennis. She bet nothing so she not only won the game, she didn’t lose an arrowhead. Ilhana’s 2-day total is $30,800.

Final Jeopardy (5/31/2023) Ilhana Redzovic, Kyle Marshall, Lisa Gargiulo

I always like to go “all in” on sports clues, but this one got me. I knew “Bend it Like Beckham” wasn’t a franchise film and the year was wrong, but that’s all I could think of. Two stumpers (Pyrenean country and president who opened the Seaway) kept me from being shut out. I thought that overall, this was one of the toughest nights for clues.

  2. Jason says:

I got FJ from Geena Davis, then, got to The Hunger Games. I couldn’t recall the year, so, thank you, VJ!

What a low scoring affair. Wasn’t Jeopardy!’s best moment. However, it may have been canny wagering by Ilhana, if she counted on Jeopardy! nerds to not know a sports clue.

I thought it was rather sloppy for not asking for more specific with Harrison. I, myself, was raising my voice (NOT yelling) at the TV, with “what about Benjamin? Clean it up!”

I wouldn’t say “softer”, but, the champ didn’t seem as intense this show.

    • VJ says:

Well, if the judges slipped up on that, maybe they will admit it. Idk if they will invite Kyle back since he wasn’t penalized on that clue.

  3. Jason Smith says:

Kyle has a legitimate beef and he should be brought back. Why was “Harrison” acceptable as a presidential answer but “Adams” was not? Inconsistency on the part of the judges.

    • VJ says:

I just watched that clue again and Kyle started with “Hen” but switched to just Harrison. That was his final answer, within time and it was accepted.

He was given a fair chance to select the right Adams. He simply chose the wrong one.

      • Jason Smith says:

Then he should have had to clarify which Harrison as well.

        • VJ says:

Well, I explained how I saw it. You can always email the show for a definitive answer. (see the email link at the bottom of the recap)

        • Jacob Ska says:

If everyone on here who is complaining went to J Archive and read what is there you will see “Henry Harrison” as a response. What people think they hear may not be correct. J Archive is accepted as a reputable source for the show. Hopefully, that source will put this topic to rest instead of using innuendos.

      • Howard says:

Some people online are claiming he said “Henry Harrison,” which was accepted. All I heard was Harrison and didn’t know why that stood.

    • Jason says:

But, as VJ said, he wasn’t penalized on the Harrison one – in fact, he got away with one. That does not merit a second time at the podium, in my opinion.

This goes for your comment here, and the one below.

  4. Kevin Cheng says:

All three players had no money going into the first break. Ilhana had 0 and Kyle and Lisa both had -200. When was the last time all three players went into the first break with no one above 0. This is a dismal moment.

  5. Collin says:

Don’t trigger this in Final Jeopardy again one more time this week, or else it will be a screwed-up week.

  6. Rick says:

Still another triple stumper for FJ, and if this is going to be anything like last week, tomorrow’s FJ may be another shoo-in. Anyways, all we could come up with in FJ was ‘boxing’ (as the sport seems to be increasingly popular with women).

  7. Ismael Gomez says:

And we end the month with another triple stumper. We could get a Wednesday losing streak in the final as well.
