WHAT IS THE BOWERY?

I found a 2/4/1932 article from the Daily Item (Lynn, MA) about Fortune magazine’s report on the Bowery Savings Bank. The bank, it says, “is the largest bank of the kind today.” During the Depression of 1930-31, total Bowery Savings deposits increased from some $322M to over $485M.

Newspapers.com has other contemporary articles but this was the only one I found that referred to the bank being located in “that internationally notorious Bowery district.” The Bowery was a respectable area in the 19th century when the Bowery Savings Bank was founded. The area’s downslide began in the 1890s and throughout the majority of the 20th century, “the Bowery” was synonymous with Skid Row. The MCNY Blog has the story (with pictures) of the Bowery’s journey from rich to poor to gentrification.

Sandee took a stab at it with Hell’s Kitchen. She lost her $1,200 bet and finished with $1,800.

Brad got it right. He added $2,301 to his score and finished with $6,001.

Adriana thought it might be the Battery. She lost $2,200 and won the game with an even $20,000. That gives Adriana a very nice 2-day total of $46,200.

I knew Final from watching SO much TCM! When I lived in NYC, I lived in Brooklyn and Queens. I only did one month in Manhattan, but that was at Mt Sinai, uptown.

Brad looked like he was kinda just taking shots. Adriana did admirably.

I did miss the one TS about the city and cannons, because I used the even more ancient name!

Not sure I’d have known Final if I hadn’t grown up in NYC. I recall Joe DiMaggio doing ads for them and for Mr. Coffee. Very often, when driving through the Bowery and stopping at a light, you’d be greeted by a “Bowery bum” who’d squirt some water on your windshield, wipe it with a squeegee, and demand a tip.

“Sioux” was key in the first DD (Sioux City, IA), and also numerous wannabe presidents flock to the state before the caucuses. That was right in the clue. Didn’t see the show, but I remember “Marat/Sade” playing on Broadway back then. Another of those rare nights I hit all 3 DDs and Final. But other than the city’s cannon-less emperor and the veggie in the water, the stumpers were unkind.

I watched only the first round, then went back to hockey when it became obvious who was going to win.

Howard, I agree with you about “Sioux” appearing in the 1st DD being obvious. I think Adriana probably was thinking that it couldn’t be that easy because she’s really sharp imo. I also remember the Joe DiMaggio commercials. I will go out on a limb and state Adriana will win 5 games or more. We shall see.

Another contestant had the same name as Sandee with a one letter difference — Sandie Baker was a 6x champ and a semifinalist in the 2014 ToC

  4. Rick says:

Well, I didn’t live during the Depression so I naturally wouldn’t have been aware of the Bowery Bank. With that being said, the FJ was still fair game.

    • VJ says:

The other way to get it was the slum angle but, of course, as Howard said, being from the NYC area helped. My oldest brother used to sing the Bowery Song. I don’t remember where he learned it.

      The Bow’ry, the Bow’ry
      They say such things,
      And they do strange things
      On the Bow’ry! The Bow’ry!
      I’ll never go there anymore

      • Rick says:

Yes, being a New Yorker might have given someone an edge. As I had stated VJ, the FJ was fair game. I mean, I have known about the Bowery Boys, and that alone should have tipped me off (or anyone else for that matter). Actually, I could only come up with Harlem, but I knew that was going to be dead in the water.
