Final Jeopardy: Words of the 2000s (5-3-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/3/2019) in the category “Words of the 2000s” was:

In 2008 Time Magazine described this new practice as “one part social networking and one part capital accumulation”

21x champ James Holzhauer, a pro sports gambler from Las Vegas, NV, has won $$1,608,630. In Game 22, he is up against: Pete Vanderhyden, an airline pilot from Murrieta, CA; and Carol Hansen, a retired database administrator from San Francisco, CA.

Carol found the last Daily Double in “Government & Politics” under the $1,200 clue, with 11 clues left after it. In second place with $4,200, she had $37,981‬ less than James in the lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

James finished in the lead with a runaway $47,381. Carol was next with $5,800 and Pete was in third place with $4,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS CROWDFUNDING?

Here’s a link to the 2008 Time Magazine article that says: “One part social networking and one part capital accumulation, crowdfunding websites seek to harness the enthusiasm–and pocket money–of virtual strangers, promising them a cut of the returns.” Fundable.com has a timeline of crowdfunding since 1997 when, it says, “a British rock band funded their reunion tour through online donations from fans.” However, the practice is actually centuries old, says socialmediaweek. Michael Sullivan is credited with coining the term crowdfunding when he launched fundavlog in 2006. A few years later, the term became more widely known. It took until 2015 for crowdfunding to make it into the OED.

Only one other clue on it from 7/21/2016 (Pranjal Vachaspati’s 3rd game): NEW TO THE OED ($400) The practice of financing “a project or venture by raising money from a large number of people”

Pete went with online banking. He bet and lost it all.

Carol was trying to think of something that started with cyber. She lost her $3,401 bet, landing in second place with $2,399.

James got it right. He bet $35,000 and won the game with $82,381. His 22-day total is $1,691,008.

Final Jeopardy (5/3/2019) James Holzhauer, Pete Vanderhyden, Carol Hansen

A triple stumper from each round:

THE SPINACH ACQUISITION ($800) Each day Berghoff’s Restaurant in Chicago makes a giant cauldron of delicious spinach in this form

A BUNCH OF HOOEY! ($1600) “Stuff and” this is an idiom to be interjected when you hear something untrue

2 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Monarchs”

In 2016 Elizabeth II became the world’s longest-reigning living monarch when this country’s king died after a 70-year reign. show

The last show of the season is July 26

  2. Joe says:

Question: When is the last show of the season scheduled to be shown?

Question: Is James a holdover to next season? Do they even do that?

    • VJ says:

@Joe, the season usually ends the last week of July. If James wins every regular game till then, yes, he would be back for Season 36. But that remains to be seen for the viewers. Only the show, the players and the studio audience knows what happened in S35’s last show.

FYI, Jeopardy! champ Jackie Fuchs attended the last taping day with Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, Austin Rogers, Pam Mueller and Alan Lin. She mentioned that in a touching tribute she wrote to Alex Trebek but, of course, she didn’t spill any beans about the game itself 😀

      • Joe Farrell says:

there would be no reason for those champions to all attend if James had lost before then – now would there? They’re not doing a farewell show for Trebek – in which case James would have also attended – see what I did there? haha. Thanks for the answer.

  3. Cece says:

@John Christian, yeah, I’m either delusional or haven’t grown up yet because, though I give credit where credit is due, I really think at 1.6 MIL, James The Incomparable Genius, has won enough money. I believe in sharing the wealth, call me a socialist, if you like.. And pity me, he he.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Cece
Well, J! invited James. There is a ballad in German by Johann Wokfangang von Goethe: {Der Zauberlehrling” = “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, with a line (when the apprentice does things he should not have done): “The spirits that I called, I now can’t get rid of them…”
I guess J! now has to bite the bullet…..
Tenho um otimo fim de semana e Aloha nui loa o Hawai’i !

  4. Bette says:

Alex I wish you the best. I am a 3 time cancer survivor and if I can do it so can you. It’s been 18 years since my last diagnosis and I know what chemo and radiation can do to your body and mind. It’s your attitude and great smile that will get you through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

Well, the bad news is that James won’t be around, but the good news is that he will be back on May 21 for his 23rd game. The next two weeks will be grueling because of next week’s Teachers Tournament quarterfinals and the week after that clashes with the Australian federal election, the Philippine midterm election, and the Eurovision Song Contest, so before James’s 23rd appearance, the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest winner will be crowned. Have a great weekend everybody, and continue to enjoy the ride of James Holzhauer.

    • William Weyser says:

Actually, he’ll be back on May 20th, because May 20th of this year is a Monday, and May 21st is a Tuesday, and when it comes to the Teachers Tournament, the 1 thing that I’m hoping for is that this year’s Teachers Tournament will be better than last year’s.

  6. VJ says:

Well, I was surprised that only one player knew it. gofundme is described in a lot of places as “free fund-raising and crowdfunding” I heard of it before I saw that 2016 clue in Pranjal’s game.

I enjoy watching James play, too, but I hope that everyone will still enjoy the Teachers Tournament for the next two weeks.

  7. Bonnie Moyer says:

I heard on Family Life Christian radio today that James has made at least 2 donations, to local places, in Las Vegas with his winnings. Good for him. Hope he continues to win and be generous.

  8. Denny 'D' says:

For the James’ fans out there continue to enjoy the ride. For those who are tired of him blitzing the other two every night he will lose, eventually. At that point us Jeopardy fans will keep watching as many of us have done since the days of Art Fleming. One thing NONE of us can deny is James’ quick trigger and his VAST knowledge of so many categories. Truly remarkable.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@Denny The people who are tired of him doing runaway games are either delusional or hadn’t grown up yet. James Holzhauer is the KING of Jeopardy! and even if you throw in the memories of Ken Jennings, James Holzhauer is a machine. They can’t go over it, so I pity the fools who are against him.

  9. paul popoff says:

loving jeopardy right now james is fantastic to watch hope he breaks the record wishing heartfelt prayers to Alex Trebek

  10. Lou says:

I.was surprised that James knew it. Not even I have heard it before. But still a win is a win. He made clean sweeps for this entire month without leader curses. Now we will see him after the TT is over. Overall my response was gofundme as well. But still VJ have you ever done any crowdfunding ? I wonder if this term is related to charity or non profit organizations. We had some triple solved though James could keep his streak alive if this keeps up.

  11. John B./I. says:

As JJ pointed out in the CotD, he never heard that expression and neither had I. Had to google it and I guess that’s why we just went with ONE, and James came through.
Here in HI – and I guess also on the mainland- you have “fundraising”, it is extremely popular here. For a babyshower or whatever.
Anyway, congrats to James, the other 2 players were extras again. He may very well beat Ken’s money record, winning 75 games is another matter. A lot can happen on the way to the Forum….

  12. JJ says:

As I stated this AM, I’ve never before heard of the term “crowdfunding”. I would have answered “What is ‘gofundme’?”, which obviously would have been wrong…
And now the good news! Those who are annoyed by James’ nightly butt-kicking sessions on J! will now get a 2-week break from him; and those of us who love this clinic he’s putting on will have the satisfaction of knowing we’ll see him again after the Teacher’s Tourney… That’s a “Win-Win”!

    • John B./I. says:

      @JJ
Just was typing when you had posted already, was a little slow there, watching the game at the same time. Lest I forget in the CotD for Monday: congrats to you as well and have a super-duper weekend!! (You can see I had no clue either and neither had the players…except James of course, he bailed us out!)

      • JJ says:

@ John – A popular/common way of raising $$ online is by setting up a “gofundme” page. Many people loathe the practice and refer to it as “Internet Panhandling”, but it has been used to benefit many terrific causes. Having said that, I TOTALLY get the concept of crowdfunding, I was just unfamiliar w/ the terminology.
        Enjoy your weekend, too, John.
