WHAT ARE THE ARIZONA & MISSOURI?
“The scope of the USS Arizona’s loss in 1941 became the focal point for a nation that had been divided over U.S. involvement in the war.” 300 yards away is the Battleship Missouri. “While the Arizona is the tragic emblem of the war’s beginning, the Missouri stands as a powerful symbol of the war’s end. It was aboard the Missouri, docked at Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945, that the Japanese signed the formal surrender ending World War II. Defense Media Network: Visiting History.
In a poignant 2012 Hawai’i Army Weekly article, Chaplain (Col.) Michael Dugal wrote: “Standing on the deck of the Missouri, you can look over at the Arizona Memorial: One ship is retired, yet afloat; the other is resting on the ocean floor, a tomb for her fallen crew. The submerged Arizona speaks of tragedy and reminds us of the cost of war. The surviving Missouri speaks of the hope and resolve for a chance for peace in our world.”
Greg got the USS Arizona down but that wasn’t enough. He bet and lost it all.
Nicole wrote down “the FDR & D Day” and it looked like she had “mem” after that for memorials. She lost her $5,000 bet and had the same amount left.
Jason had the Pearl Harbor Memorial and the beginning of Arizona. He only lost $1,000 bet, finishing with $19,000. That made him a semi-finalist. “You’re coming to Washington, D.C.,” Alex said.
Here are 2 triple stumpers from this match:

OPERATIC SETTINGS ($1600) Offenbach’s “Orphee aux Enfers” is usually translated “Orpheus in” this hellish place

Wouldn’t oratory, as well as elocution, be an acceptable 4 syllable word?
I think the etymology dictionary agrees with you — “formal public speaking, the art of eloquence” (LINK).
I realize the word orator is right in the clue — Orators know Latin for “to speak” gives us this word for the art of public speaking
but since I’m not getting whatever nuance there may be, I would accept oratory 🙂
NJ.com has Jason’s win covered already. He teaches in Union, NJ. Exit 141 on the Garden State Parkway. LOL. (I used to live there)
At least Greg & Jason got half of the fj clue. Don’t know what Nicole was thinking because I thought she played a good game imo until fj.
I would like to have seen the clue writers inquire about who was president at the beginning of WWII and who was president when it ended.
I thought it was a bit much for them to write down. First they had to get past the first thought for the beginning (PH) to the Arizona, then think of the Mighty Mo for the end AND write all that down!
40/61
pretty impressive.
And this is why I only said it was ‘tempting’ to predict a triple solve. Wow. I’ve been burned before but this one would’ve left scars.
Nicole was in a tough spot. I personally wouldn’t have felt confident in a wild card spot with only 10k, but now she’s really a longshot. Lauren’s small wager yesterday might not be as costly as I thought.
Was it truly necessary to pre-empt the first 8 questions for a “breaking news” report here about the Indiana primary?? Absurd, I say!!!!
It’s as if news organizations have forgotten that they can just put a crawl at the bottom of the screen for non-essential stuff, and point to their website for more details. There was no good reason for them to break in just to say “Hi! Trump won, Hillary’s leading…bye!”
Wow, I so wish they would do that. There are so many channels dedicated to the news and live reports online, interruptions are just unnecessary,
Exactly. I find the needless interruptions so infuriating.
@Rhonda, I added the first 8 clues you missed to on Page 2, though two of them are already in the recap — the J! round DD and the What’s for Lunch clue
Thanks so much, VJ. I’m always so grateful for you.
@Rhonda, absurd is correct. You know what channel I watched the first few minutes at 7:30. However, I still didn’t appreciate the interruption on ABC at 7:00.
I am always so envious that you have Jeopardy on two channels, Jacob.
Greg is out.
Ha ha! I really laughed out loud at that $200 What’s for Lunch clue. I got it because my grandparents used to eat them for breakfast every day. That was the first time in my life I ever heard them called a delicacy.
Not gonna give the answer because the clue and image are on Page 2 now, for anyone who missed the game.
@vj, I couldn’t stop laughing because I’ve never heard them referred to as delicacies either. lol
All I can say is that your grandparents are health conscious.
they were and it paid off – Grandpa lived to 93, Nanny 96. She outlived her son (my father)
