WHAT IS “MOON RIVER”?

Henry Mancini (music) and Johnny Mercer (lyrics) picked up the Oscar for Best Music, Original Song for “Moon River”, the theme song of the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, starring Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly. According to Second Hand Songs, Henry Mancini was first to record it on 12/8/1960. The first theatrical release on October 5, 1961 was Audrey Hepburn’s version with Johnny Mercer’s “huckleberry friend” lyrics. Since then, there have been over 850 covers of “Moon River”, although only Jerry Butler, Danny Williams and Andy Williams had major hits. Connie Francis recorded it in English and German, and Allan Sherman did a parody called “Chopped Liver”! Can you imagine how many CDs it would take put together a collection of all of those covers?

Audrey got it right. She bet $5,000 and finished with $12,200.

Ryan wrote down “Hi, Mom!” That cost him a whopping 10 grand, but he won the game with the remaining $16,600. Ryan’s 4-day total is $86,600.

  2. Jason says:

I didn’t get FJ. However, I did say, out loud, “That’s Holly Golightly”. Just couldn’t think of “Moon River”!

As per usual, I got about half of the TS.

I was begging Adriana not to bet a lot on that Daily Double.! She got that on the heels of 3 triple stumpers in the same category and I was just saying nooooooooooo!! Don’t put yourself in the hole!

Then I was begging Ryan to let her have that $400 clue but nooooooooooo!!

That was a pretty tough one. I knew it because way back in 1971, I attended the Sigma Delta Chi (national journalism society) convention in DC, and connected with a bunch of students from U of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. (i was a college senior and president of our chapter.)

Cinch final, at least if you’re older than the movie it was from.

A little surprising no one knew the Blue cavern’s name or the 2 Dutch cheeses.

  4. Ismael Gomez says:

That daily double was not kind to Adriana.

  5. Lou says:

Well looks like Ryan is in good position to be in the toc, but Christine Welchel might be out if Ryan wins game 5. Audrey played well today.

This song was one of my favorites, especially the renditions of Moon River from musical legends like Andy Williams, Jerry Butler and so forth. Does anyone have a preference of which Moon River singers they like the best?

    • VJ says:

I really never liked this song that much so idk what my opinion is worth, but I’d surely nominate Danny Williams (not Andy) as the best male version and Connie Francis as the best female version
